    Sigh...

"Most people think that when Obama says we have 2% of the world oil reserves, that that means of all the oil in the world, we have 2% of it.

That's not what that means. Folks, with new technology, we have more oil in the ground that we can get than they have in Saudi Arabia. That "2% of the world's reserves" means 2% of what has been brought up, 2% of what has been produced, not 2% of the supply. This has been an out-and-out lie, and I don't know how else to categorize it. He is purposely misstating this. This is a left-wing catcall for as long as I have been alive, and in this statistic is the implied guilt. "Look at us! We've got 2% of the world's oil, and we use 20%, and it's not fair. We are raping the other nations on this resource!"

That's what that means. "A country that has 2% of the world's oil reserves but uses 20% of the world's oil," means that we are raping the rest of the world. We are unfairly taking advantage, and that's not the case. In the first place, 2% of the world's reserves is a misleading statistic 'cause it isn't true. The second thing that you would have to do is -- I'm not gonna dispute that we use 20%, but what do we do with it? Are we hoarding it? Are we not sharing it? Is nobody else benefiting from our use of oil? Do you realize if every one of us... I'm gonna give you statistic I have used on this program before to illustrate my point here.

If every automobile were shut down today and not a single automobile was driven, we would still need five to six million barrels of oil a day to satisfy all the other products and services that derivatives of oil are used in. Even if we stop driving, we'd still need at least five to six million barrels a day. But, folks, this is not an evil country. And the president is trying to say that we have used more than our share, and that's the justification for making us cut back. That's the justification for high prices. That's the justification for us having to drive smaller and smaller cars, and maybe not even drive cars at all but drive batteries -- and maybe get on mass transit."

With a new born, I'd relish driving to work each day, even if gas was $20/g

Gas hasn't been under $4 a gallon in the 2+ years that I've lived here.

Bullshit. Oil is just as easy to find now, the issue is companies not being allowed to drill and pull it out of the ground. The current political regime is trying to force a political agenda onto the people of America by having the EPA strong-arm energy producers and oil companies.

The fact we're still burning gasoline in our cars is the main issue here, it's 2012 for fucks sake! I want my Mr. Fusion!

Seriously though, we should have been weened off this gas tit by now. It's such a screw job, and our entire economy teeters on the price of fuel. Rediculos.

Our economy will ALWAYS teeter on the price of energy, in which ever form the government decides to force on us. We cannot be weened off energy, unless you are advocating everyone going back to living in caves. Even then, our economy would teeter on the firewood market.

Not energy as a whole, just gasoline, but I agree.

The price of fuel effects everyone and everything. There are plenty of people living off the grid who aren't effected by the price of electricity, heating oil, or the like. Even those people need fuel for transportation unless they're using a horse and buggy. It's a pipe dream I know, but by now we should have an alternative to gasoline, I believe. There are many reasons we don't and many forces/special interests that prevent the development of these technologies, and that is the real problem. In the broad spectrum our energy is still cheap, so where is our motivation to innovate? It's a clusterfuck.

Oh, and it has nothing to do with him stopping drilling on our own turf at all costs? The guy wants nothing more than to see 10 dollar a gallon fuel here. He and his nut sack G. Soros and band of liberal socialists will stop at nothing when it comes to sinking the ship (USA).

I went through this back in 08' just like everyone else. I was even driving the same beat up 1996 Cavalier back then too...even at 31 mpg it still sucks filling up.

I'm going to do something about it this time, blame what/who you want...I'm going to cut my consumption by 50% by getting my M license and get a 600 or 650cc motorcycle.

Has anyone noticed there are a lot less "big" vehicles on the road? Lot's more cars and small SUV's (hybrid Escapes and such)

People will adapt, the bubble will pop...lather, rinse, repeat

When morons started crying about supply and demand during the late 70's energy crisis, gas was peaking around 1.20 to 1.40 a gallon. Just six years later gas prices went down to the .80 cent range and actually plummeted to .67 cents for a long while before the steady climb started. Same shit today, however extortion is not as frowned upon as it once was.
