      Profit.

Seriously though there is much that needs to be done. I do need a pros help for some things but will have to just wing some others. I know what expenses are, know what needs to be done to cover it all, know how to work on cars and so far have never had an unhappy customer. I know thats not enough.

I got all my tax crap done and registered the name. I have a seperate account setup for tax payments and have a base salary for myself and partner plus commision based off shops profit after shop expenses are covered. Small portion for both of us and a larger portion to go back into the shop so we can grow and I can get a real office manager soon to take care of the paperwork skills I lack.

I appreciate everyones advice and am taking it to heart. Based on what people here have said I have changed to a more appropriate name. I also am working on advertizement. Gonna do mail flyers for Golinda and Robinson cause they are cheap (post master gave me a hookup) plus I am trying to get a billboard at the I35 exit that would leed to our exit. Only so much I can do at once.

Cards are cheap though. $50 for 1500 with the pictures I posted so I will prolly get them anyway and if they seem tacky then I will go the simple route.

Well the Mark is gonna be the shop car. Its my partners car and hes about to throw some cash at it and I am gonna build it. Gonna have the block bored and have it line honed then lap the deck and heads. Throw in a 5.0 storker kit with decient compression and some forced induction with meth injection. Also planning a 6 speed conversion. Slap some stickers on it of the shop and see if we can get it near 200 in the Texas mile.
        Goal is 1000 rwhp.

Now before you all start the complaining, I aint spending a dime on it. I am just doing most of the work and all the tuning in my spare time. Gonna be a long term project (about a year) but will become the face of the shops performance side. I already built one that was bad ass but this time we are taking it to the next level.

The BMW on the other hand, well thats just my POS daily driver and is ugly and slow and easy to work on....... or the exact opposite.... forget why its on the card.

        • A little bit of advice from someone who has started a new small business in the last year, and ran a couple of them in the last 4 years.

          Advertising

Consistency is key. If you want some good pointers, pick up a book called guerilla marketing I believe. Its full of good information. Don't piss your money away on one time or short term advertising. If you can't afford to advertise consistently (radio, magazines, newspapers, etc.). Then all you are doing is pissing money down the drain, one time, or limited run advertising as simply forgettable. The radio market is slowly declining due to satellite radio and things of the sort.

Business cards, simple and professional. I custom designed my own business cards. I used my company logo on the front. The background is a satin color and the logo has a UV coating to make it stand out. They are printed on 16pt paper, and the back is white with black text giving my information. Simple, professional, and still draw attention.

As for book keeping its not too difficult to get set up yourself. I may have some available resources for you, or can create some. Shoot me a PM.

As for the chain comment. You may never have the aspirations of becoming a chain/franchise operation. However, go in to billy bob's corner shop with spittoons on the floor and an old deer head on the wall at random times, then go into a franchise shop at random times and compare their rate of business and the quality of their clientele. If you project yourself in a professional manner, offer a professional environment, it will be reflected in the quality of your clients, consistency in business, and increased profit margins.

Shop car or not...you need a PROFESSIONAL image. Id say have a logo designed. There are great options online that logo designers design different options, submit them and you pick from the crop. The cheapest one I know if is about $90. Check out 48hourslogo.com

                • Already keep getting people stop to see if we are a shop and after throwing up the signs people stop in A LOT. Think we may just do ok.

                  • The signs look great. Color is good, concise, look professional, and easily visible.

                    • oh, one suggestion would be build in a small office for the customers. Framing up a simple corner shouldnt take up that much space and will be much more professional.

I havent taken many pics yet cause it needs to have the floor done but there is a pretty big waiting area and office. That big door with the front sign on it slides to cover the bay on the end and exposes the office area.

I love to learn. I just ordered tht book. Thanks.

I really feel I am on the right path. Got my tax stuff done even though it wasnt needed just so I have the option of buying parts with no tax. Got insurance on the shop (only $250,000 for now) to cover all but the most exotic cars. Advertizement is in the works. Tools out the wazoo that I have seen some of the "Big" shops without........ it is a dream and I hope I can hang onto it.

Right now my only problem is I am a little overbooked for tomorrow through Thursday.
