  • Consulting and Process Implementation for auto dealerships, specifically the F&I Department. It's not bad, keeps me busy, and I travel every week as I cover the country. I was in sales for this company, then saw a gaping hole in post install follow up and support, so I created a position, took the position (like a dumbass) and now I'm looking for something different. Not because I don't enjoy it, but I'm not paid nearly enough for what I do, especially since I'm the only one doing it... I leave, they are screwed. Waiting to hear back on my absurd raise request currently.

    • Mechanical engineer. I started out at Raytheon then left there after about 5 years, some of that was co-oping in college. Worked at halliburton for 2 years and then moved to a company in austin.

I love mechanical design and analysis, and hope to some day start my own company. Either as a consultant or inventor. Consultants in O&G make serious money, but I would also love to just run the show and produce products.

It's gotta be up there pretty high in Dallas too. There's a stand alone in a Collin County suburb that has a doc driving a Ferrari.

I'm just curious what everyone does and how difficult it is to get into doing whatever you're doing.
I used to sell cars. I sold from 2001 to NYD 2008. On that day I was fired. A few days later I was drinking/playing pool at a bar when I ran into an old car business acquaintance that owned a private ambulance company. He hired me on($9/hr is better than $0/hr) to drive a wheel chair van. From there I got my EMT cert, then medic. Now I work for one of the largest rural 911 service providers in the country. After I finish my associates in the spring I'll decide to go nursing or FD. The money isn't great but we live comfortably between my income and the wife's teaching salary. there's also the caveat that I get paid no matter what. If I am having a bad day, I can just go to work, put in my 24hrs and still get paid. That's why I'll never go back to commission full time.
