A few days later I was drinking/playing pool at a bar when I ran into an old car business acquaintance that owned a private ambulance company. He hired me on($9/hr is better than $0/hr) to drive a wheel chair van. From there I got my EMT cert, then medic. Now I work for one of the largest rural 911 service providers in the country. After I finish my associates in the spring I'll decide to go nursing or FD. The money isn't great but we live comfortably between my income and the wife's teaching salary. there's also the caveat that I get paid no matter what. If I am having a bad day, I can just go to work, put in my 24hrs and still get paid. That's why I'll never go back to commission full time.
Go FD and never look back. Retirement plus pension can't be beat and it's a better opportunity to problem solve and treat patients as a medic than as an RN. Sure working 3, 12's would be nice at times but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Money is better here in the FD, every day is different with fire and medical, and I get to drop off those PT's w/ the RNs. If you aren't passionate about the fire side though don't pursue it. There are too many guys who have got in because it's "a good job" and have killed the tradition and desire to be experts at the job.

Yup...when I was interviewing after residency a job I was considering was $550k/year. They guy with the ferrari probably is part owner of the stand-alone. I'm sure he makes considerably more.
