I wish I still had my 02, I'd sell it to you. I sold it right in your price range last March, and Paul had just replaced the engine. And Eric is right. Anything goes wrong with a new Edge, it's going to be much more costly to fix.

LOL As much as I've had going on in life and work, I haven't even tried to sell it. I plan on making some time to clean it up over Christmas. Yes, it probably is too much for a kid that age. LOL

Our hard limit is on what we got from insurance. We already paid for the first car and the bulk of the repairs over the last 10-11 months. We're not coming out of pocket any more on this purchase. He's actually lucky that we ended up with more than we paid for the first car, but that is the limit of his boon.

Oh, and BTW, this is still a 17 year old that has been driving less than a year. We were ok with the bone stock fox's power levels, but not much more than that. Again, once he's 18 it will be his decision to have a fast car. Until then he will have limitations. Just like the GPS device, which is not optional.. That's the price of getting anything that is even moderately fast.

Is he working, make him save up and pay for the difference. I've had my son working since he was 16 and saving his money for a vehicle. Of course I paid for his Lightning and he paid me (us) back.

There was one that I thought would have been great, but by the time this all happened it was already pretty much stripped to the core, and is gone now. I thought about looking for a roller, since we could swap everything over from the old one, but that get's us back into level of effort and timing issues.

Any 5k NE is going to likely need just as much work, but more expensive work, than a 5k fox, providing both cars don't need anything major such as paint work.
The comment about the vert was a joke dude, surely you got that. Again, for the price range we are looking at, a decent fox is going to be hard to find. If we can find the right one, awesome, but we aren't going to drag out a search for weeks in the hopes of finding one.

What he can do is accept what we give him, then save as much money as he can, and when he's 18 and graduated he can sell what we gave him, and combine that with any saved money, to buy whatever he wants.

Our original car purchase plan was that he save up as much as possible, and we would double it. The challenge became him finding a job without a car. We don't have an extra car for him to use, there is no public transportation in our area, and we do not have the ability to take him to and from work 100% of the time.

Our initial plan was to buy him a cheap econobox, so as I said, he's already lucky that he is not getting stuck with a 15 year old civic. lol

The main reason he got the last Mustang was because Don happened to be doing nothing with it, and gave us a deal on it.

And in reality, the last car, as well as whatever we end up getting, is actually our car (mine and Lea's). With the understanding that as long as he stays in line it will be signed over to him upon graduation (which we fully expect, as he is a pretty good kid).

Surely you got that I was just screwing with you, aside from my point about a NE being no better than a fox in the "It's almost 2015" stage of the game. If you can find a true roller than just needs a drivetrain dropped in we could have that done in a couple of hours. Well, you could have it done, while I watch and tell you what you're doing wrong. It's seriously easy as hell. Few electric connectors, a handful of bolts, and you're done. Oh wait, I'm talking to the guy that took 11 hours to do a clutch cable, nevermind....

I know this may not be what you want to hear, but take a look at sn95 prices. That's a good indication of what three-ish years is going to do to the value of a new edge. Fox body cars are holding well, if not gaining value. He's a pretty good kid and took a lot of pride in the last one, I expect the same for another one, and he might actually be able to get more for it in a few years. Not that this is any sort of investment, but given the two options and your plan, It's hard not to look at that as a factor.

BTW, when we ended up with Brent's car, after he paid us to put the engine in, we spent 500 on new tires that it needed pretty badly, and another 800 on body work to make it nice again.

Yep, the front tires were toast and that dent right in front of the rear fender well. The body damage was from the previous owner and it had sat for years prior to me buying it.

Clutch cable took an hour or so (the second time ). What took so long was that fucking quadrant! Shit is far too tight in there. Besides, he was helping me the second time, and did the bulk of the work. So that's on him! lol

As to the roller.. I would be cool with that, and what I initially hoped for with the one that had been posted here. But again, finding that right car in a reasonable period of time just doesn't seem likely.

I even thought briefly about limiting the replacement to what we spent on the first car (keeping him whole), and me keeping the current fox as a donor for a new toy for me. I just don't want to end up with it sitting in our driveway or garage for the next 5 years until I finally get around to doing something about it.

That spot on the rear quarter was on a previous repair, and one day, the bondo fell off. That left a spot about 4" in radius that stood out like a sore thumb. We had a mobile guy come over and pull the metal out like should have been done in the first place, fix it all up, and paint it. We had him buff the whole car while he was there.

I don't think you guys want to mess with a roller at this point. DJ made a good point about SN and NE gens values as well. Seriously, stick to your guns and take the time and get another fox for the kid. He has shown that he will take care of it, and if you're inconvenienced for another whole week or two before you find it, is that really a big deal in the scheme of things? He is likely going to end up being a car guy, and right now this is going to be heading in one of two directions. He is going to get something newer and boring, and regret for the rest of his life that his awesome car that he was in love with was taken out of his hands, Or he can look back and say that he was able to get a similar but better replacement(maybe a different color he would prefer, or an engine mod or two like a Cobra intake or something) and it will be something he will be happy about. If he was a little shithead I'd be telling you to buy another car from Don, only this time make it a Festiva. Give the kid a break, he's already had a shitty couple of weeks.

With the exception of this, I agree with you 100%. But given the totality of the situation, it just may not be in the cards.

As to the exception, he was certainly proud of his car, but I honestly had hoped to see him more invested in it. Not trying to throw him under the bus, but he only washed the thing a handful of times, kept a ton of shit in the inside (garbage, clothes and whatnot), and didn't really spend the time with it that I expected he would. Hell, the first time a vacuum touched it since we got it in January was when I did the clutch cable like 2 months ago. And that was me doing the drivers side floor board because I didn't want to lay in all the shit that had collected.

This did start to improve over the last month or so, so I hope it continues with whatever he ends up with, but I have spent more time and effort on cars I didn't even like. lol.
