I agree with the folks here suggesting a repair. It's worth the expense, and Austin can get involved in fixing it up. Get some skin in the game, so to speak. Would make for some great memories before he runs off to college.
So, irregardless, I'm glad he wasn't injured. I know he's sick about the car though.When the government pays, the government controls.

Just got off the phone with her insurance and the good news is that they use current value based on vehicles for sale and will adjust for low mileage and condition. So hopefully, we will be able to upgrade him a bit. He's really sore today. His back and neck are hurting pretty good so it looks like we'll be heading to the ER at some point (per the insurance). I tried to just take him to his regular doctor, but they and the insurance insisted we take him to ER. Hopefully it's just soreness and an achy heart. He is just crushed and keeps looking at pics of it. I don't think many people understand how much he loves that car. Poor kid..Token Split Tail
