Under what circumstances would you take a pay cut

I am looking at being laid off after the first of the year. I have been doing this work for 8yrs that pays several times more than what it translates into back in the states. So to stay in the same field, I am resigned to the fact I will take a HUGE cut in yearly income. Large enough that I have been strongly considering not even thinking about staying in this field.

I think the oil field is calling my name but only after I spend some time on unemployment holding out for that right job.

Chasing paper is what I have always done. I do make a great wage but I dont see any advancement where I am at and moving to another group seems to be hard to do also. The turnover here is huge from low pay and burnout.

I see that here, too. I've been here 7 years this month, and there are only a few that are still here from when I started. I dont even learn new guys names until they have been here for 3+ months.

That happened to me this morning. They told me Brandon quit and I was like, which one was he? I mean obviously something is wrong when 5/6 of your drivers started in the last 90 days.

My 10 year anniversary was in June, I have an acrylic plaque and some candle stands to show for it.

I'd take a pay cut to know I'm helping a small business be competitive and to work closer to home.

i took an initial pay cut to go from truck driving into the oil field, but now a few years later i'm doing far better then i ever imagined I would in less then 5 years.

That is kinda where I am at. I would rather resign than stay. My current company is listed as one of the worst places to work.

Texas County and District Retirement System (TCDRS). Under TCDRS, employees are subject to a mandatory deduction of 7% of total earnings and matched by the County on a 2 to 1 ratio.

The county system is in better shape than other pensions in the state (from what I've seen, I'm in a different system) but you won't be vested until your 56 ( I think I read that you are 48). How long you want to work? It will certainly help supplement whatever you have in your 401k, but if you work until say 62 you're looking at somewhere around 30-38% income replacement from your 3 highest years. You probably want to see if they offer you a 457 plan you can contribute to as well if you do take the gig.

Yep 48 and wont vest till 56. I dont really plan to retire till atleast 65 since I cant get full social security till 67.

I was planning to start a Roth instead of the 457 since it would be unmatched contributions.
