Under what circumstances would you take a pay cut when changing jobs?

I'm in IT, and I am not happy with the career path opportunities at my current job and am bored with what I am working on and hate the long commute.

I got offered a job from a local government entity and I am thinking about taking it. It is a huge paycut but it would be a way shorter commute, pension, 12 paid holidays, 12 sick days per year.

I am getting to the age I really need to think about retirment (48) plus my health is ok right now but I have some issues.

    Cliff notes
Got offered a government job for less money.

That's really for you to decide. I took a job that was far more work, far less money, and far more stressful for an opportunity to learn and build resume material. So, it really all depends on what you want yourself. I could see the benefits you're talking about.

I took a hit to take the position I'm in now, but it got me a much better place in our organization. Of course they also paid for a full relo and housing until i found a place. That coupled with cost of living differences, and no longer being on call, made me feel like it was a good decision. I can enjoy my evenings and weekends now without toting around a work phone, and the office I am in now has lots of opportunities and room to grow.

Work to live or live to work.

        You decide.

Have fun being out of a job when the government can't do their budgets.

That is part of the deal too. I have been on the desktop side for the last few years and want to get back into the server side. So the chance to get some new skills and sharpen some old ones is something too.

I would still have to be on call but I think it would only be once every 5 weeks instead of 24x7. I would think a government job would be less stressfull then what I have now. Plus 13 mile commute vs 39 miles.

since it is local government that should not be really a factor like it would with the federal governmnet

Don't know what you make right now, but The company I work for pays very well and is hiring for IT positions but more from a BA standpoint. While they are not offering a pension for any new hires now, we get 20 sick days, 3 weeks of vacation to start with, and 5 paid personal days. Full benefits and 401k as well.

Don't know where you live, but the office is in Irving. PM me if interested.

What pension system? The stress level seems to be higher in larger organizations but so does the compensation. I don't interact with IT much where I work but most of the professional level employees who come from the private side seem to be satisfied with their work/life balance.

Took a 25% cut to move from SF back to Dallas but that's a raise. These days, quality of life means the most to me. My wife is getting killed at work and we've decided she'll just resign rather than risk damaging her reputation if her company owners won't staff here appropriately.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

After this college beating, never again. Romance is for teenagers and chick flicks, days off are for chumps, and honor is in the dollar.
