I say thank you, please, yes ma'am, yes sir, and every other form of courtesy I can muster to any person of any age, color, or religion. I'm not going to verbally degrade someone and act like an ass because I feel they need to acknowledge my manners....that's just.... RUDE ..... and I'm better than that.

You do realize I was being completely facetious about yelling at people? You just acknowledged it was rude to not say thank you, when you started your conversation defending it as not being rude. That was my entire intention for our dialog. I just won the internet.

Ever seen the difference in how someone treats you in New York City vs. A small Texas town? It's a valuable trait, and that kind of mindset in my opinion is a culmination of the lack of responsibility and laziness our culture continues to promote.

The only thing I said I would do in the event a particular woman was not polite enough to thank someone for holding a door open would me not holding the door open for that particular person, which you just deemed not rude. So I'm not returning something rude with something rude. You were just arguing that both what she is doing and what I would do is not rude.

I usually do get thanked, or there's about a 50/50 chance that the person I'm holding the door for grabs it behind me and says "No, I insist" at which point I thank them, and proceed through the door.

My entire point for our conversation was the fact that you're saying I personally shouldn't feel it's rude when someone doesn't say thank you. I feel that's rude. You said it isn't rude. Then several guys agreed it's rude. That is my whole point. I think you got confused in what you were saying earlier.

I'm also a yes sir, yes ma'am person. I get people all the time who take offense to it, thinking it's an age thing. But it's a respect thing. Hell I say thank you sir/ma'am to waiters, bank tellers, gas station attendants, people holding doors, or just about anyone who does something nice, or a good job.

I get this all of the time. I am a manager in a Western retail store and we have a lot of families that shop with us. I very frequently use the same courtesy with the older children, calling them ma'am or sir. Hoping maybe that will instill a bit of that in them, if they aren't getting that reinforcement at home already....here is a bit of a song by a Texas, Todd Fritsch

They're not being rude, they're just not giving you the appreciation you think you deserve for doing something that no one asked for you to do in the first place. Right? Now, if they ASKED you to hold the door then not thank you for doing so...that's different.

I said.... "they're not being rude, they're jsut not showing you the appreciation you would like to receive for doing them a favor" I think it's obious by that statement that it's MY opinion that it's not rude when smoeone fails to say thank you.

I said NOTHING about how your personal feeling on the subject were incorrect or otherwise...just that you obviously were expecting some form of commendation for your actions, otherwise you will consider them rude....and I never said that you shouldn't find their actions rude... I just said that in a situation like that....when I'm faced with it... I don't think it's rude. I've much bigger fish to fry than to get my panties in a twist over the lack of an occassional "thank you"
