Sounds great except the doctors and nurses make very little compared to what the hospitals actually bill. I think Dave has mentioned that he makes about $300 an hour. The issue here is not really what the doctors and nurses make as much as what the hospital bills for the overall service.

I think Ryan makes a good point though, we are in a period where the medical profession is going to be overrun with business. However, once the baby boomers all die off, you are going to see some serious fallout. Reason being is that it is a well known fact that people use more medical care in the last six months of their lives than at any other time.

lots of overhead and malpractice insurance for the hospital to pay.

Nah, that's a normal disposition for people involved with the medical profession. I worked for a private ambulance company that had about a 60-65% accounts receivable at the end of each quarter. It trickled down through the business model resulting in paltry paychecks for medics out there busting their ass on 12hr shifts serving the general public. Why? Picking up mendicants, illegal immigrants, the chronically unemployed, etc..That sect of society don't typically pay their bills, but you provide the same level of care you would treating/transporting a corporate CEO from an affluent neighborhood. Insolvency usually precedes or is a contributing factor in premature burnout. Medic vs. M.D. is not apples to apples, but that's my 2 cents.
