You can't add stuff into an already signed contract. Telling someone 2 years later they have to move to keep their current job is bullshit, and I doubt will hold up in court unless broke detroit pays for moving expenses and buys houses that won't sell. If it were me I would tell them to go fuck off.

You can when that contract is renegotiated and since they're going through bankruptcy, that means all those contracts are up for playing with. At least that's my understanding. I fully support everyone who works for a city living in that city. You want the pay raises and huge benefits? Cool. You get to pay the property and sales taxes in that city that pay you.

Then again, I also want this to apply for politicians as well. No nice neighborhoods, you live in the ghetto.

You do realize politicians represent pretty big districts that usually have several different classes of neighborhoods, right? Not to mention redistricting every few years; you can't force people to sell homes and move at random.

I absolutely know that, but if you're the mayor of Detroit, you live in Detroit. Same with city council, dog catcher so on and so forth. If you're paid by that city, you live in that city. Don't like it? Work some other place.

No shit. I really approve of the idea. The only problem I see is finding qualified, decent human beings that are willing to not only work in Detroit, but also live there.

Yeah, that's exactly how it works. We need you to move to ____, and we are offering a package of $____, or we are going to have to let you go. But go ahead and tell me about this vast wealth of experience you have in the Corporate world.

I know how relocation works. What Detroit is trying to do is "We're going to transfer you to our Detroit office, and you must live within city limits." In a traditional relocation the company says "We're transferring you to the Arlington office." and they leave it up to you to choose where you live. You can live anywhere you want, as long as your ass is at work in Arlington. You assume too much knowledge of my personal life.

I don't see the point in fireing people because they dont live in a certain neighborhood or city. How about we focus on hiring people that show up to work on time and do their job, regardless of where tbeh live. People commute all the time if they choose. By some of your arguments anuone living in the country would be fired if they didn't sell out and move the city. The government mandating what city or neighborhood you live in sounds an aweful lot like big government.

                        A- I'm not assuming anything.
B- That isn't how they all work. You'd know this if you had any experience with higher level Corporate jobs. I've turned down positions because of the cities I would have had to live in.

I don't see a problem with that. You aren't entitled to any specific job.

No different than companies who refuse to higher someone because they are a smoker. It can be argued that residency is an important part of the job and in the best interest of the Citizens of that City.

I never said anyone was entitled to any job. I think it stupid to fire employees because they live outside of a city. And accepting a job in another city that would require you to transfer is different; if you live in Dallas and accept a job in Seattle and you are ok with that it is fine. Working at a job for several years while commuting and suddenly being fired because of your residence is bullshit. Hell alot of the people on this board commute daily and by your logic they should be fired since they arent close enough to their office. If someone wants to commute why is that a problem as long they show up on time and do their job?

Ok, I guess the entire business world is "bullshit." The company I work for has fired people that would not relocate. It happens all the time. Businesses move. Departments move. Offices close. If you want to keep your job, you move. If you don't, you join the ranks of the unemployed. It is pretty simple.

                            Don't be so dense.

You've had employers try to tell you which cities you can/cannot live in? Sounds like horse shit to me.

I don't care what jobs you've had. I know you haven't had any mid or upper level management positions. That is not an assumption.

And yes. Especially in large cities.
