There's starting to be some chatter about signing Prince Fielder or extending Hamilton's contract. According to the DMN sports writer, the money will come out the same for either guy ($120 million for 7-8 years) for a long-term deal. Hamilton will make $13.75 million next year? DAMN! That's good money for a part-time player. Fielder played all 162 games last year at 1st base, and was great at the plate.

Fielder has some attitude problems, he's not a Frankie Francisco or Milton Bradley but he has done some stupid things. Mike Maddux had to hold him back from fighting one of his own pitchers in Milwaukee, not a good sign. He's also very over weight and a vegetarian, not sure how that happens.

However we are thin at 1st base talent wise, there aren't really any prospects in the farm system. We are going to have to sign a free agent anyways or stick with Moreland and just accept an out every time he faces a lefty.

Personally I would like the 2010 AL MVP. Hamilton to me is a better overall player. 5 tools. He gets hurt a bit too much, but he is all out every play.

Hamilton only has a one-year-deal right now. They would need to extend his contract, which is what brings Fielder into play. A 7-year deal would put Hamilton at 37 years old, while Fielder would be 35 (according to the DMN).

In the last 5 years, Hamilton has averaged 116 games per season. Fielder played in all 162 last season. Those "tools" only matter if you're in the field...

I'm not bitter, just a realist. he plays 2/3's of a season. He'll be 31 in May, and it won't get better. Funny how the "he's better than Mickey Mantle" crowd faded...

Never said it was. They need a 1st baseman, because obviously, Moreland is just not working out. I was/am a big fan, but he's just not the level of player a defending AL champ should have at 1st. The only connection between Hamilton and Fielder, is you can't have both because of the money. Is Hamilton worth $15-$20 million a year with his history?
