Jet is correct, pinion depth is the concern if youre chasing howl. Backlash doesn't tighten with break in.

I have never experienced a problem with ford racing gears. They also have the same casting numbers as oem gears, and have for as long as I can remember

More likely improper installation. Like Paul I haven't had any issues with any of the FMS gears either.

How many sets of Motive Gears have you personally installed? How many different applications? I've had nothing but shit luck with their gears and when I confronted the distributor I was purchasing them from, they tried to play dumb with me and act like I was the first one with issues. About 3 months later, they stopped carrying Motive Gear. I'm sure its just a coincidence…….

Some of the Ford gears are done by Motive. Some are reboxed Ford OEM which is damn good gears.

4 settings in a rear gear

                1. Pinion depth
                2. Pinion bearing pre-load
                3. Carrier bearing pre-load
                4. Lash

These are listed in their order of importance......

I've done a dozen or so installs with zero whine or howl afterwards. It's not nearly as complicated as people make it out to be.

The only aftermarket installed gears I've ever had make noise were not FRPP. Three sets of FRPP with no issue. We fucked with the 4.10s I put in twice and they still made noise on decel.

Iv done 4-5 sets of Yukon gears in 4x4's and never had howl. Like everyone said, make sure all the settings are right then use some marking compound(I use oil based yellow artisit paint) to see how they mesh.

I have "heard" (note that I said "heard") that richmond gears were bad about whining; i don't know if there is any truth to that or not, or if it is just another internet urban myth out there.

Noise is usually caused by improper setup of the gears, and that's where I would begin looking. Use Grape's list as a starting point of things to double check.

Yukon is the brand I am recommending to customers now days. I really like Precision Gear too especially for GM 10 and 12 bolt stuff. The older Ford Racing gears were damn hard to beat too. The newer stuff, I've heard mixed reviews about.

The yellow paint works fine as does even something as simple as a bright colored grease which cleans off easy to re-read after adjustments. For me, I can feel the gears when I turn the yoke and know whether its right or not before I ever paint them.

I try to stay away from Richmond as well. They are now owned by Motive Gear and before that, the gears still sucked.
