  • Such thing as gears that don't howl

Hello everyone I was helping my bud install some 3.55's in his 4 eye fox. And the gears howl now. This is usually my experience. Made me start thinking and I wanted to post this thread. In my time I have probly installed 10 or more sets of gears. We always use a dial indicator and make sure its in spec. But I never had one that didnt howl at least a little.

Is there such a thing? Or do you have to use the factory soft gears if you dont want a howling noise?

Yep, quality gears properly set up do not howl. Are you using the correct oil? I know the fords called for 75-140. How are you checking the wear pattern/pinion depth?

Unless you are running some solid suspension (no rubber/polyurethane bushings)

I've used Ford Racing and Motive gears, none of them have made any noise. Howling is usually too tight on the backlash. Gears will tighten up a couple thousandths of an inch once they wear in. I usually set them to middle to high middle tolerance to allow for this.

Never heard of that loosen, sure but not tighten. They will tighten when warm for sure. Ive seen many due to incorrect pinion depth, howling on accel or coast depending if the pinion is in or out. Howling all the time = set waaaay to tight.

If they wine pinion depth is usually the problem. or the back lash is super wrong. ford gears are true to the housing as they get, and usually set up with less grief then anything else.

                    Motive Gear is garbage.

I did not know this. I will try it that way cause usually I have it somewhat close to the tighter end. I'll try middle or upper spec. Also saw someone said mentioned Motive. Used those a few times, didnt know they werent any good. As for pinion I used this guide:

Nothing wrong with Motive gears, they were actually making the gears for Ford Racing for a while, if they aren't still

And that's why ford racing gears sucked. You have to find ford oem gears to have good ones. Cheap factory take outs are best IMO.

I have done alot of gear sets, and I have never observed a gear set tighten up the back lash as they wear in. If you check the back lash with out the caps on, and then check it again with the caps tq'd down the lash will be tighter. If the back lash is crazy loose it could make some noise. The noise I find from to much back lash is mostly a clunk sound on decel as it goes from the heal of the tooth over the coast side to the toe of the gear. If the pinion dept is to shallow it will whine under load, if it's to deep it will whine on the coast. Most issues I see with gears sets making noise, no matter what the brand, they are just set up half ass wrong, by someone who hardly had a clue as to what they were even doing in the first place.

Deburring the pinion gear is helpful as a lot of times they are quite jagged.
