  • 84 turbo gt help needed

I have a 1984 turbo gt that I put an 88 tbird motor in. I am at the end of what I think I can do. I believe I am having a vacuum problem, but I dont know. At idle, it builds up boost, but as soon as I take off it drops. I may have messed up the whole vacuum set up. I loosely fabricated an intercooler set-up, but it had the loss of power before then. I have never been able to get great power out of the car, even with the other motor that died for no apparent reason. I dont have a clue of how the vacuum lines should go now. I am willing to bring the car to someone to help me, or if someone can take pictures of their vacuum line set up, I will try it again. Any advice would be great.
Most mustang people dont know much about what is going on, I am begging one of you guys, (yes begging), to help me get my car back on the road, and running like a 4cyl turbo should. I am in the I20 and Hampton area.
I am not rich, but I am willing to do get together what I can to get my project started.

    Thanks in advance.

You may have the vac lines going to the waiste gate messed up . Is it all stock parts or do you have any kind of boost controller other then the factory one ?

I did add a boost controller I put together. I didnt do it til later. It worked ok before and afterward. It has an IHI turbo on it. I checked for boost leak, retightened everything several times.

if you're making boost at idle, your timing is WAY retarded

I am not making boost at idle. If I remember correctly, it starts when I get to about 23 or 25, I think. Can go to about 8 or ten pounds before it starts to detonate. I think it is detonation. The other motor didnt pop when it got to ten, I think it shot to the wastegate by then.

First thing you should do is a full tune up and set timing

I did set the timing, but I want to find someone I can trust who can do tune up and maintenance on it. I have general knowledge, but I am trying to find someone who knows about these cars that will help me get it set up correctly. I have been fiddling around with this thing back and forth for about 2 years now. I get frustrated and quit for a while. When I did get it running good, not great, the old motor just shut down and threw a rod (i believe) as I was going up a hill. All of the fluids and everything were good, it just chunked it. I still have that motor in the backyard. Once I get this 88 TC motor running right, I want to get that one set up to run a bit stronger.

                          Thanks again for any help.

When you drive and get to about 10lbs of boost does it trailer hitch (buck and jerk real bad) if so do you have an aftermarket fp regulator. I had a kirban fail on my svo that did the exact same thing. Try putting a stock regulator on and see if it helps. I would look at the car but am clear in denton. If I can help let me know.

I havent been able to get to 10 lately. It does have the stock fpr though. It does pretty good, or did pretty good with the fpr that is on it. When I had the old motor the best it did was 10.28 in the 1/8 and no spinning. Since I switched to this motor I was able to do 10.35 spinning through all of 1st gear. I was told that stock, in the 1/8 it should still do a lot better. It made it to Denton about a year ago when it was well. I am not looking for an overnight fix.

It could be me that is the problem. This was my first time ever putting a motor in a car. I like to tinker with things, so, I knew somebody with an engine puller and did it by myself in about 2 or 3 hours. The 88 t-bird just didnt have the same setup as my 84 turbo gt with no I/C.

Even after fixing the vacuum leak (which i think may be the problem) I want to get someone who knows about turbo 2.3's to help if possible.
