Yep - I was notified that I am now no longer accruing PTO until I take some. I'm stuck at 160hrs... Our policy not to pay it either unless terminating. That shit ain't gonna happen.... well, hopefully anytime soon, anyways...

I don't understand not using vacation time. I have people that work for me that lose some every year. Fuck that. Even if I had a dream job I would never lose a single hour of vacation time. You guys really in love with your work that much?

I'm in sales, work from home, do whatever I need to do and still get my job done. Even when I leave town to do leisurely stuff (not a vacation), I'm still getting paid and technically still working.

I only take "official" time off when I'm taking a family vacation. Love my job, but I do work my ass off.

I can see it making sense for people in sales.

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

It is an American thing... Friends that live in Europe now actually take holiday, and they are gone for 3 weeks at a time They don't answer calls from work, they don't check email etc.

CA state law is that they can't stop our accrual, or lose any time when the year rolls over, so there's been a push a few times to get it off their books. Sometimes it's simply a PITA to take time off in terms of the work load that builds up, so I end up taking PTO and still working half the day.

Like you I don't plan on leaving any time soon, so I just consider it a good problem to have. I'll never have to worry about needing PTO for whatever reason, and not having it.

I'd give up some of mine if I could pick it a little more on the fly. Like a months notice. Trying to schedule 4 weeks for the year in jan around 14 other people doing the same with 12 blacked out weeks is a pain

Some of our older employees have their PTO maxed out, around 800 hours, and just use the 5hours pto we get a week towards their weekly total. So they work 35 hours a week and get paid for 40.

Cash out their bank when they retire.

Apparently the company used to have unlimited hours and some guys had 1500+ in there. So $80+ an hour x 1500 pay out was a good retirement check for them.

That's the other side of the coin. Even when I am officially on "time off" I'm still checking/responding to emails, taking urgent calls, etc.

It's just the nature of the beast... And yep, it's a good problem to have.

At my last job it was frowned upon to take any vacation days and were hard as hell to get approved. They would even call you in on your vacation, bunch of fucking assholes.

They can cap your accrual though.

It's not necessarily that I love my job too much to take time off Eric, though I do enjoy what I do. In sales if you aren't working, you aren't generating revenue, and the things that come in while you're off have to get taken care of when you get back. It's not the kind of work that has a pause button, or something that I can offload to someone else, my relationship with my clients is my responsibility.

In most cases it's better all around to take care of the more important issues as they come up, so I almost always end up working at least a little bit during my vacations.

The flip-side of that coin is that I can also take time off while I am "working." For example, it's company policy that we can't take PTO the last 2 weeks of any quarter. This includes the week of Christmas, so I'll be "working" from my phone's wifi, while I spend time with family in DFW.

That's total bullshit. There are some other Manangers I know that pull that with their people and it isn't right. You earned it, you take it.
