I'm in the life stage where if I take any time off, it's to do something with the wife and kid, so it's been Disney World, Sea World or some sort of staycation with zoo trips and such.
I don't understand not using vacation time. I have people that work for me that lose some every year. Fuck that. Even if I had a dream job I would never lose a single hour of vacation time. You guys really in love with your work that much?
Well, I do love the work that much, so that's part of it. The other part is that there are lots of big decisions to be made about the business and I've got to weigh in, if not 100% own those decisions, so it's tough to get away.
Almost 100% of the time I get a day of I get caught up in stupid spur of the moment problems and don't get to relax at all. I always have expectations of sitting on my ass relaxing but I feel like I'm wasting time and end up cleaning up or fixing something.

You're a little higher on the food chain than most of us, man. lol
I lay in bed all day. If I don't, I go out and buy shit I don't need. That and clean up the house, ride my bike around, try to avoid spending money on gas.

I always use my vac I would never let it go unused its free money to say the least. Get paid time off away from work best part.
Plus I'm luck, I always carry over vac every year and have to use it before end of march the following year. I usually take 1/2 days every Friday from Feb thru March.
I get Vacation the first week of November and I have to use it all before the end of the year, as our vacation is per calendar year, and it's use it or lose it. I'll probably just sit around the house.
I think I always have something to do. Kid, house, cars, clean, yard work. But if I had an entire week off I'd make at least a day to do absolutely nothing!
This. Before kids, the wife and I did a stay-cation one year and one day of that was just laz-ing around the house. The mere fact that we had nothing planned, nothing to do, nothing to hurry for, etc...was so_damn_relaxing.

That's total bullshit. There are some other Manangers I know that pull that with their people and it isn't right. You earned it, you take it.
I had a job like that for 3.5 years. I never took a vacation, and the only time I was able to "get away" was a 3-day weekend at the Riverwalk in S.A. with my gf at the time, and I still got called a few times. I finally got fed-up and quit. Not that I was some important badass or anything, but my manager was super-pissed. "You can't quit, you've got to do this, this, and that before you leave." Me: "Find somebody else to do it." It was nice on my final paycheck getting paid for all of my vacation hours though.

LOL @ your boss. That is the mentality of a lot of those guys, that no one can take a vacation because the work won't get done. This is why you cross train people. Refusing to let people take their vacation or giving them a hard time about it for no logical reason is a sure way to get people to start caring less and less about what they are doing, and like in your case ending up saying fuck it and finding something else to do. The flip side is that people will work their asses off for you if you just take care of them and do the right thing. Well, most of them will.
