PA/WV is where I primarily grew up. TX in '96 via Fort Hood, met my wife, wife won't leave and the job market is good in the Dallas area.

You'd think there was no unemployment problem in the country, with all the visa people working jobs in these major cities.

FTW isn't so bad.....though virtually any place in Dallas County is definitely not Texas.

So, how are you classified if you come from the south and stay?

I will say I have only been in the DFW area so I might be a little jaded. I miss the Mojave desert, I used to go out there and play and run the historical trails out there multiple times a year. The drivers here are the worst I have seen. I will say that Texas has the best gun laws. I do like those.
Im from San Jose, CA. I felt the same as you until i started venturing out of DFW, now i love this place. DFW in general is shit though, and I would LOVE to move to Austin.

Does that mean i can stop referring to myself as a Californian?

Thats what I hear, Austin is a very nice place to visit. For me it isn't just the area, how the hell do you cope with this fucking humidity, and the fact that it does not cool down at night. It is awful.

Yea the weather takes a bit of getting used to, but all things considered, ill take that in trade for no state tax, and being able to own (real) guns.

Though i will say i miss jumping on HWY 17 through the santa cruz mountains in the summer and going to the beach which was about a 30 min trip. Also the heat isnt bad there at all. Most of the cars i had there i dont even know if the AC worked lol

I'm from NC originally. I was stationed in Kingsville while i was in the Navy. Moved to Naples Italy for 3 years then moved back in 03. After a short stint in NM I moved back to Mansfield in 05 and I'm here to stay.

While I do miss the Mojave, Cali as a whole just flat out sucks. Cali drivers are worse than Texas. You're comparing beautiful, wide-open Southern California desert to the DFW Metroplex. Apples and Oranges, bro. Now let's compare DFW to say... LA or San Bernardino.

I was stationed at the Hood in 96 as well (Aco 2/7 Cav).

I was 4ID, Task Force 21. HHC 1st Brigage, HHC 2nd Brigade, 124th Sig and then guard duty at the airfield (4ID side) my last 2 month. (why did I not want to re-enlist? )

Happiness is Fort Hood in your rear view mirror. I still remember that image to this day. My 3 garbage bags full of stuff and never coming back.

Actually Denny, the drivers here are worse. They do far more stupid stuff then the california drivers. When I was out there I had a job where I would drive about 500 miles a day. I would see stupid stuff (dipshit drivers are everywhere) in a months time. I see the same amount of stupid shit here in a week driving 200 miles a week. It is bad here. I miss the whole place. I miss seeing mountains, and I have family out there that I miss.

                            HHC? You were a REMF?

                            <-- 11M

I hear you, Hood was the ghetto. When I ETS'd at a lovely E4P I thought it was easy to just to the NG, and I'll be damned if we didn't go to Hood every time for drill and the 2 weeks. I figured out a way to go inactive after that....

I'll never step foot in Kileen again.

Should have been a REMF, but with the gear we were testing we were out in the field non-stop. Since it was support gear, generally the Combat Arms folks were not needed - so we'd stay out there or go out w/o them. 4ID had some budget problems and could not always send everyone to NTC, the field and such. This happened a lot more when I was in 124th Sig and we had a CRAZY CO.

We'd support the battalions, so where ever they were - we were or we'd simulate them being there. When with HHC 1st Brigade I was attached to 1/5 Infantry out of Ft Lewis. That was a breath of fresh air compared to Fort Hood. Great leaders and motivated soldiers. It felt Army, as opposed to Hood that felt more corporate.

Compared to OIF and OEF though...gear is being used though these days.

Threw away my winter jacket about 10 years ago, doubtful to ever move away

Texas has many nice areas, get out and visit them , I've been all over the great state
