lol. Keep in mind a mosin nagant's recoil absorber is a steel plate. I theorize if you held the rifle out in front of you muzzle at the ground and squeezed the trigger it would fly several feet into the air.
Maybe it's because there were a few months between ownership of my old 91/30 and my M44, but the M44 doesn't seem noticably harsher than the 91/30 did.
With that said, neither were exactly pleasant to shoot more than ~100 rounds through in an afternoon.

Yeah you should give it a run again. I sat under a tree shooting turtles with a 91/30 and probably shot over 500rds. With my m44 I don't think I'd get through a box of 20.

I'll have to pick up another 91/30 to test that out; mine was stolen out of my car a while back.
I went through ~150 rounds last time I took the M44 out, but I paid for it the next day.

It also depends on what position you're shooting from. I dont find that rifle enjoyable to shoot for long periods. The m44 is much lighter so it naturally hits harder.

I took my Polish carbine out to the farm to try it out. Over 2 days I only managed to get about 20 something rounds out of it because it bruised the shit out of my shoulder. You could almost see the individual shots where the plate was against my shoulder.
It hurt like hell for a day or so i couldn't stop smiling, and can't wait for another chance to go shoot it.
I have a 91/30 too and its no where near as rough to shoot as the carbine.

The M44 kicks harder than an 8mm mauser. Next shoot we have (minus the friday one) I'll bring my M44, it's pretty fun to shoot. The trigger operates off thoughts.
What kicks more, your mosin or your .350 mag?

The .350 is much harder hitting even with it's rubber absorber. I chipped a tooth with that thing a few years ago. And, my Remington 600 .350 mag weighs 2lbs LESS than an M44 nagant. There's a reason both the Remington 600 and .350 rem mag cartridge disappeared - it was because they put the most powerful cartridge with the lightest and smallest rifle they made - not exactly the best combination.

The 600 hit pretty hard, left a small bruise in my shoulder, but it wasn't unbearable to shoot. I've always heard about the Mosin having a lot of recoil but if it's less then your Rem. 600, I think I'll pick one up.

A Mosin 91/30 is very reasonable on recoil for such a high caliber. They are great guns for practicing iron sights. Optics however prove to be very difficult and not cost effective on them. If your plan is to turn this into a scoped rifle there are better choices for the money.

If you want a cheap surplus rifle that's accurate as hell and fun that you can mount optics on look for a K31. Great guns, mag fed, straight pull bolt and several different mounts are/were available. I loved mine. (stolen) Wolf and hornady were selling ammo for it in a few different varieties, along with the surplus GP1. Typical of wolf I could shoot all day with that stuff, the hornady is noticeably hotter.
