I believe MM&FF did an article that found 6800rpm as the sweet spot.

It's already been done. I bought a '97 Cobra in Oct of '96. I raced it at Pacific Intl Raceway (then Seattle Intl) and at Bremerton Racewtay many times. My stock '97 ran 13.7ish at 103 using a 7,000 rpm shift point on stock rubber. I had a few 13.6s and maybe a 13.5 in there once when I got a great 60ft, but 13.7 was quite routine.

One day at Bremerton a guy came out in a great '96 Mystic and was ticked he was running a lot slower shifting at the engine torque peak as you guys seem to think is correct. Well after a quick convo, he broke into the 13s quickly too.

It's the maximum torque at the driveshaft that matters. The 1-2 shift if I recall correctly goes from 3.35 to 1.99. That's such a hefty drop its ridiculous. 3.35 x torque at 7,000 rpm >>>> greater than 1.99 X peak torque which is why you hold off on shifting. Seriously there is a freeware spreadsheet out there in cyberworld that calculates ideal shift points based on transmission ratios and torque curves. I helped a guy make it back in '97 too. He raced Datsun510s and it's probably out there under datsun510 something or other on the web.

Then my friend bought a '98 LS1 Z and with just an airlid and cutout it ran 12.8 at 110. That was way faster. We lined them up and raced them a lot and were in the same car club. We were the only two guys running manual transmissions that raced regularly too.

I'd like to have another '96-'98 Cobra if the right deal came along sometime. I'd probably prefer a '94 or '95 though with a 351W stroker.

Right now I have two other car projects going, my sons daily and my toy.
