  • GM 200r4 trans question...

So, I pulled the GN apart yesterday and started making my list of things to replace. The rear trans seal was pissing fluid everywhere and when I pulled the driveshaft out, I checked the vertical play on the output shaft. I'm used to seeing 1/32" or so of movement, but it moved nearly 3/8" total.

I am guessing this isn't normal but I suppose the driveshaft yoke could support the output shaft and ride on a bushing? It's been so long since I fooled with an Auto I just need another opinion.

It looks like the car has an Art Carr trans in it with unknown mileage and some billet stall converter. Hopefully it's been built well.

    Thanks!

You are right about the output shaft.

The 2004R trans does not have a rear case bushing, therefore the tail bushing acts as the case bushing. A-lot of people think these are shitty trannys but I have built several that run sub 6's in the 1/8th.

That's great info. This trans is an Art Carr version. Which one of the 3 I don't know but atleast it's been built.

Can I change the tailshaft bushing without opening the case? If so, I figure it's a good idea to do while it's out and easy to work on.

        Thanks!

Thats going to be next to impossible to do since its a one piece case. There might be a tool out there somewhere. I would just replace the seal which you can do with a hammer and screwdriver. Same seal as a th350 or 700R4.

Oh wow I thought the 200R was a two piece case.
            The 700 R. Is a two piece, right ???

I have a tool that allows me to pull the bushing and re-install without disassembly

Since it's all apart right now, I would like to service that bushing so I know it's better than just putting it all back together. This car makes pretty serious torque and I don't want to start shitting trans fluid as it destroys the tailshaft seal.

got a link where you bought the tool?

                  Thanks!
