  • 92 Coupe is smokin.. Best remedies before she explodes?!

    Hey hey...

So my 92 smokes a bit. Whitish smoke. Not always, but usually when I fire it up, and sometime just sitting at a light it'll emit some plumes... It's just on and off.. 113,000 on the clock. Light mods. Stock from the heads down.. Runs and sounds fantastic...

Was mobil1 synthetic 10w30 a bad move? Seems like it's burning that shit up pretty quick. I'm admittedly car challenged and could use some advice.

    What oil, and any additives?

Or do I just drive the piss out of it until it kicks the bucket and then have to stroke myself...

Oh, and here's a very small token of my appreciation in the form of an ex gf so you too can stroke yourselves.

ah.. so it's almost time for some twisted wedge heads and a cam? I can cope w/ that..

It's just odd because I switched to synthetic and it seems like it started smoking a lot more with that switch. I know it's burning a decent amount of lube...

Did you go to thin on the weight of oil? If it started after the switch, go back to what you normally use and see if it quits.

startup smoke is typically caused by valve stem seals. Oil consumption outside of that is most likely through the rings/hone

What intake manifold? Does it have the pcv valve filter and baffle?

yes sir, also when sitting at lights, not moving for a few minutes will cause it to smoke when you take off. Valve stem seals that is....

I love this site. Only on DFWmustangs will someone post up a pick of a half naked ex to pay tribute and not a single person acknowledges it.

Smoking on startup won't hurt a damn thing. It's likely one of 3 things, all mentioned above. Valvestem seals, rings and PCV valve.

I'd replace the PCV valve first - it's 5$. The others, just live with them till it shits the bed.

If the pcv vavle replacement doesnt help. Get a small metal inline fuel filter and put in the pcv vacuum line. If the smoke stops after a couple days you will know the intake needs to come off.. If not it wont hurt anything and you ll know you need to start saving for a set of upgraded heads and or motor.

Cant open picture at work but thanks.

The pcv can be cleaned and if it rattles it is working. My guess is valve seals.

Cant you do a compression test to determine rings?

Small puffs of white smoke can be intake gaskets too. I've had success torquing down the intake bolts and never even replacing the gaskets. (!) It's free and easy, so I'd say it's worth a shot.

The filter missing under the pcv or the oil baffle will cause the smoke too
