  • Programming an extra key

I was wondering where I could get a blank key I have programmed for my 99 mustang or if I could do it myself. I have looked it up but can't see how to do it on my own. Any suggestions would be nice. Thanx

If you only have one working PATS key, you have to get another one programmed at a dealer or a locksmith. If you have two working keys, and are looking to program a third, you can do it yourself. Just stick the key in the ignition, lock and unlock the doors, then cycle the key from the on to the off position 8 times in 10 seconds leaving it in the on position on the 8th time. If done correctly, the locks should automatically lock and unlock on their own. Then, you're done.

I think that's for programming a Fob. You do need both original keys to program a 3rd. Put one of the programed keys in the ignition and turn it to run, but don't crank the engine. When the security light goes off, put the next programed key in and on, also till the security light goes out. Then put the unporgramed key in and on and when the security light goes out, it's programed. Turn it to off and then use it to start the car to check it. This is how I did my flip key.

I used JDGregory84's method to program the Fob part of the flip key. One thing with programming the fob...when you cycle the key, do it fast and be ready to program all your fobs cause this also drops all the fob signals stored. So if you have one and want to add another, you cycle the key till the doors lock and leave it in the on position, push any button on the Fob and the doors will lock and unlock again and then you have to hit any button on the one you already have or it won't work. Once you turn the key to off, it will take it out of program mode and you should be locked in. As always, check them both before you call it good.

Oh shit. You're right. That's what I get for posting that on no sleep. Thanks for the correction.

To program a key, you still need two working keys. You just get the first working key, crank the motor and turn the car on, do the same thing with the second working key, now do the same thing with the third blank key. That should be all to it.

Again, sorry for posting up the wrong info originally.
