are the rebuild kits absolutely necessary when replacing tires? I'm not complaining about price or anything but why would something that is functioning properly need to be replaced?

Places like Discount tire try to sell that as mandatory when changing tires. but it's really just bullshit to make $$$. I wouldn't mess with them unless there is a problem..

Yeah, when I was pricing out tires for my truck their online system automatically puts them in your cart if your vehicle was required to have them.
The only thing that has been changed that is TPMS related is the valve stems on my wheels. Because on a GM vehicle the sensor is screwed to the valve stem. The sensors themselves are still untouched stock pieces from GM..

The reason they sell it is because the tech is supposed to disassemble the sensor prior to breaking down the tire. The kit is a new oring and nut. The tech lets the air out of the tire then removes the nut on the outside of the wheel on the gm cars and pushes the sensor through and it falls inside the tire so it isnt broken during disassembly of the tire.

Any one who doesn't rebuild there tpms is ignorant. They newer rubber tpms valves should be replaced any time changing the tire because it's rubber. After enough time, rubber cracks. All other metal valve tpms sensors need to be rebuilt because the retaining nut is a one time use disposable piece. If you don't change out the rubber grommet, washer, and valve core, these parts will start to corrode. spending a little bit of money to prevent corrosion and cracking is a lot cheaper than replacing a sensor later when it breaks due to lack of maintenance.sigpic

I know the GM sensors we have here you have to replace the valve stem's because they don't come out of the old rim without damaging them. Only a 9 dollar part. Now does anyone know if I can use the GM sensors in my 07 mustang. If i look at replacements online, they look the same and have the same 315Mhz. I dont want the band style setup anymore.
