  • Blew yet another spark plug out 2004 GT

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anybody heard of a recall on the 4.6 motors for blowing spark plugs out? Last Night I blew number 4 spark plug out for the Second time in about 3 years. This time unfortunantely it took the threads with it. But evidently from what I read this Happens all the time for 2000-2004 Mustangs and Lightnings.

    Intake on motor only.

theres only 4 threads or so in the head, I thought by 2004 that was fixed. Timesert it... easy fix

Pretty common on the regular truck motors as well. Instead of having a full 8 threads in the head, they only had 4 at the bottom of the spark plug hole. I've had a few vehicles come through the shop that I was able to just put a plug in, but there's been 2 that the threads were shot. I used a kit from Oreilly's to repair it, it has an adapter that threads into the old hole and uses a triton 5.4 3 valve style spark plug. It comes with the adapter, spark plug, shorter coil boot and spring.

The first 1 I did actually came back about 9 months later with what the owner thought was an exhaust leak. I checked it out and the insert had backed out. I removed it, checked that the threads were still in fair shape, applied plenty of loctite and proceeded to tighten the crap out of it.

The second one was not a scheduled job, my buddy is has been my local parts slinger since Oreilly's opened a local store in the little town I work in. He called me up @ 7 pm several weeks ago, I was trying to finish up some a\c work on his mom's car. Said a guy from Frisco pulled in with a horrible exhaust leak sound and a miss. I was afraid it had blown a plug, advised him what to look for, and after confirming the noise was coming from under a coil had him send the guy down. I pulled the coil and plug, the threads "appeared to be there" so I tried to reinstall the plug but it wouldn't hold. Was close to closing for Oreilly so I had Brandon bill and deliver a repair kit when he got closed up. I installed the adapter and plug and had the guy start it with the coil out so I could listen and make sure it wasn't leaking. Sure enough it was. So I pulled the plug and tightened the adapter some more. I didn't want to over tighten it but didn't want a repeat of my previous experience either, especially with it not being a regular customer. I finally got it where I was happy with the seal, buttoned it up, cleared the codes and check engine light and settle up with the guy. He worked for and is related to an long ago good customer of ours. He had brought his girlfriend and her 2 kids up to fish a local pond. Anyway, long story short I didn't break it off in the guy on the labor, I made a little money, they got home, and my buddy made a sale. Got his mom's ride finished and out of our hair (a bunch of repairs and maintenance that Brandon and I knocked out Retail would have been @ $2800 on a pain in the ass Saturn) and finally got to go home.

I use a kit that reams out the existing hole and allows for a steel insert to be installed and the original thread pattern to be used.

Are the timeserts the same fix you can use for the mid 2000's 5.4 spark plug issues?

Not sure about timeserts but the kit I've used has worked on 4.6, 5.4 and V10's.
