  • Check engine code need help

    Vehicle details: 1999 Ford Exploder Eddie Bauer 2WD 5.0L v8. 148,000 miles
It is in pristine condition and this is the first check engine ever. Previous issue (haven't been fixed yet) is when warm, u have to prime the key a few times to start it quickly. If not, then the engine cranks and cranks then starts. I.e. weak fuel pump(?).

Last week going to work, I hopped on precinct line and got up to 50mph. I could smell unburnt gas and check engine light popped on. It didn't run any different. I pulled over and looked underneath the car for gas leaks and inside engine bay. Nothing. This weekend I took it to autozone for a code check. Here's what it says:

    P0455
    Definition:
    -EVAP large leak detected
    Explanation
-ECM detected large leak in the EVAP system during a system monitor test
    Probable cause
-defective, loose or missing fuel cap (replaced in Feb. 2012 for inspection)
    -EVAP canister broke, hose cracked
    -Purge vent solenoid defect.
    -Vacuum leak at engine

That is alot of shit I know. If a person smells gas, which one is the most likely. I really don't want to start replacing crap. Anyone else with any similar codes and what did u do to fix?
    Thanks!

Start with the gas cap. The fuel tank is pressureized and can cause it to run abnormal if it won't hold.

I'll check it, like I stated in my first post, I replaced the stupid thing just to pass inspection lol. I should be happy that's all it was. For a 13 yr old ford it passes with flying colors.

Evap leaks can be a pain if It's not the fuel cap, if It's not a smoke machine is required to determine the leak.

crawl underneath and check the fill hose the rubber part that connects to the metal tube.

Follow all evap hoses from the intake to the gas tank. There are quite a few rubber hoses connecting the metal tubes. They dryrot and crack, just replace them with a tight fit hose and hose clamps.

Then you can clean the evap canister vent valve. If none of those fix it then pay someone with a smoke machine.

You should be able to go through all of that stuff in an hour or two and it will be cheaper than paying someone.

I find em all the time right at the intake leaking, usually at a 90 deg bend.

Gas cap or purge valve solenoid as previously stated.
