OBDII code issues

The car in question is a 2002 Mustang GT. My code reader cannot connect with the ECU and gives the reply "Protocol J1850 PWM" or just sits waiting to connect.
The terminal and connections look good and the reader is working. Any advice?

First thing I would do is make sure the DLC's fuse is not blown. A blown fuse will not allow the scanner to talk to the car's network.

Yep, and then try another scanner.
