  • Msd dizzy

So I bought a direct replacement dizzy for my 5.0, 87 GT from MSD. The first one lasted 2 blocks and the dist. shaft seized to the housing and it turned the whole dist so far it busted the TFI module. I sent it back to MSD and they sent me another one. Well this one lasted about 100 miles and died. It will not produce spark. I put the stock one back in AGAIN to get me home. WTF?? Y'all ever have this many problems with MSD?? The other MSD dizzys I've used have never failed me BUT I have had their coils fail me.

I've always had good luck with them. My old setup(6AL, coil and Dist.) are still running in my old truck from around the year 2000. But I think they've changed manufacturing since then.

Check the TFI. I had one that went through two MSD TFI modules.

I've had crap luck with MSD products. My 65 F100 is on it's 3rd 6a, the distributor does not advance consistently, and the coil is the second one from them, and it arc across to the low voltage side. The MSD cable from the distributor to the 6a isn't waterproof, so any moisture within 10 ft will make the box fire. I wish I had left he stock Ford ignition on it. I thought it sucked until I got this setup.

        Good luck.

It's the magnetic pick up inside. I think the actual name for it is the hall effect something or other. Had the exact same problem a few years ago.

Yep, the best part was the first box they retested and sent it back as not having an issue. Put it back on, same issue. I finally figured out the it you moved the trigger wire harness, it would trigger. Its on a 460 with a decent cam, and will shake the truck at idle. Nice!

Everyone else I know has had great luck with their products, but not me.

Rachel's car has the TFI MSD dizzy, no problems till a year or so into it's life, the pickup decided to commit suicide and jump up into the spinning rotor.

Replaced with a stock pickup coil (they use stock electronics). No more problems

The pickup doesn't have any thing holding it down. it just slips over the inner shaft of the distributor housing.

MSD seems to really have gone downhill in recent years. I bought a MSD dizzy off the canada board used years ago with a broken gear. I bought a new gear and ended up fucking up the dizzy trying to switch gears. Called MSD, explained I bought it used and fucked it up and they said send it in and worse case I had to pay for repairs. A week later I get a brand new dizzy in the box with a receipt saying no charge and even thanked me.

THAT is customer service. I bought shit from MSD even if I could have gotten a better deal elsewhere.

Fast foward to a few years later, Im building a 240Z and the LS1 ignition box isnt sending a cranking signal. MSD tech support says it must be a charging issue or its not spinning over fast enough. I did everything I could and still nothing. Send the box in and they charged me $80 and didnt fix SHIT on it. The "new one" did the same thing. Ended up being a lot of people complaining about it. Took forever to start the car. After enough cranking the box would eventually send out a signal and the car would start.

Then at the same time I ordered some MSD wires and ends to make my own wires. The ends were the wrong ones in the right package. Summit told me to call MSD and MSD told me to call Summit. I went back and forth about 4 times before Summit finally exchanged them.

                    FUCK MSD

Well I just talked to MSD. I love it when they say send it back in. That's just another $11 shipping!!! Hell I coulda had a dizzy made out of Gold by the time this is all said and done. They won't just send you a part either. They have to diagnose it themselves. Bunch of Bitches!!!
