  • Found a 302 GT40P engine used but

how do I know if it's been siezed up by the dealership during a cash for clunkers trade-in. It's on Craigslist right now as a complete engine top to bottom. Any tell tale signs I can look for to see? Residue on the plugs? Anything? I just want to drop it in and go.

Rotate it over, check the oil, and plugs.... If they did put that goop in there i should be evident in the oil.

If they put it in there it will not turn over. If it does, then yank the oil pan and pull a rod cap. The bearings will tell you what's up.

the 302s that have been a part of that program usually break at least the #8 rod...the heads should be fixable

Just take it apart and go over it. Thats what u should do with someone elses used parts. That way there is no question

pm how much it is.....i may be able to get you one that isnt F-ed.

btw the guy above is correct.....if it was part of the cash for clunkers event it wouldnt even turn over....... process for these cars upon trade in.....drain oil, pour magic juice in, run till it breaks itself.....or locks up due to no oil and liquid glass being in there.
Your local VW parts Master.....need a part?

It a fully assembled engine from the oil pan to the cooling fan. I seriously doubt he's going to let us take it aprt. It's on a wooden pallet I believe.

I really only want the shortblock. I was going to sell the heads, intake and tb to make the shortblock a very minimal investment.

I dont know that you could ever get the block clean enough to use. That liquid glass shit is nasty!

I agree, I just hope it will drop right in as is. My question is, if I pull the pan then what does that stuff look like. I'm assuming the oil has been long ago drained and maybe even flushed. I'm just looking for signs like any strange color that stuff would leave on the plugs or anything.

If you can get into the pan you WILL know if it had that junk in there. If the stuff has not hardened it will be the thickness of maple syrup on a cold day...
