I hope you guys don't mind me sharing one more time about Benton, but I was so moved today at his memorial.
First off, Benton made Mom promise that his body be donated to Science. He was in hopes that maybe he could provide others with a chance to live better than he. So we had his Memorial this morning in Irving at the Biker Church he attended.
It was great to see that all these guys and gals that he shared the "In the wind" life with took time to be there in full attire and riding in on their bikes on a morning of 28 degrees.. The front of the church was lined up with bikes.
We walk in and there is a number of folks in there. Many family and many his biker family. Looked around, and to one side of the pulpit was his Harley. Man, how touching to see his bike in the church. It was standing on a cow hide rug that Benton kept it on with pictures of his life in various places.
10:00 and the music started with his pictures flashing across the screen. From his earliest baby pics all the way to his last biker days. Not to leave out the baseball player, the wrestler, the motocross racer, the Airborne Ranger, the Father, Son, Brother, Husband and the Cowboy.
I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't ball through out the 20 plus minutes of watching his life flash before me. I shed some tears, but there was this happy feeling that would come across me as I watched his smile in almost every picture. Benton was a good man that would give you his last dime to help you in any way he could.
One of the bikers stood up and read off Benton's family and a brief summery of his life. Then another, the Preacher stood up and gave a good sermon and talked about his friendship over the last 10 years with Benton.
I was still doing pretty good at this time. But then the preacher did something that I will never forget as long as I live. He asked if all those that rode their bikes would go outside and start their bikes and rev them up as a salute to Benton. One after another the bikes loped till they were all started. Then the roar of each Harley grew louder and louder as they reved the engines. If you hadn't started crying before, you lost it at that point as I did. I had tears rolling down my cheeks as they saluted my brother. What a piece of memory that I will forever Cherish. And just as the roaring began to settle down,... Benton's bike fired off right there in the church. Almost as though he road off to heaven on his bike. There wasn't enough tissue in the house to wipe the tears as we all listened one more time. A quick few revs in Benton style then the bike shut off as we all clapped with joy and sorrow at the same time.
I'm so glad that Benton was remembered for who he was. I'm thankfull for so many things. From a chance to tell him goodbye to a send off in a way that we all could relate to that could only portray, my brother Benton.
Thank you brother for all the good memories you left here with us all.
