  • Oh hell no!!

I just heard a nasty rumor and I need to find a way to verify it's truth.

Apparently, some asshat decided to give the go ahead for some section 8 apartments to be built in my area of North Longview.

They are building them right next to the fairly new UT college campus that we fought hard for. It doesn't make much sense to fuck up this wonderful area with a crack head haven. Especially since it's right next to the fucking college that was brought in to make Longview attract wealthier people.

We just had a huge school bond in order to rebuild nearly all of our schools. Their basis for the bond was "Pretty schools are good schools" and hey will bring in more businesses.

These apartents will cause our property value to plummet, but you can bet your sweet ass they'll keep the tax rate high in order to pay for this school bond that has already gone over budget.

So, how do I find out if it's really section 8 apartments?

Usually, there's some kind of notice on file with whatever municipality is in charge of your area, be it city hall, or a county office. They usually run an add in the back of the paper announcing it, hoping you won't notice. Run your ass down there, and check it out!

I've searched the internet for anything remotely similar. Our local newspaper is online. I've gone through the LEDCO (Longview Economic Development Corp.) website. I looked through building permits. Nothing.

Would this type of info be posted on the permits board at the construction site?

It should be posted. You can always just go ask them.

In point of fact, I'm betting whatever info you get from the permit board could greatly enhance your internet searches. If it's for an apartment complex, it should declare the management company (assuming it's corporate). They always have a shitty name, like, "The Oaks by Your Mom's House." Google those names.

No one is down there right now.

Originally, the rumor was that it would be 600 units with the assumption that it was being built to accomodate the expansion on the college.

This latest bit of info came from a realtor down the road as I was filling his propane. He said it will be 230 units of section 8.

He might just be passing the scuttlebutt on. I'd dig into it.

I'm certainly going to dig. Then I'll bitch and kick the dirt.

i lived in the apartments off of garland road and buckner(the ones by sonic). they were pricey but very nice. no problems with any neighbors and they kept the place looking and running good. well the last few months there we started seeing some 'people who annoy' at the pool all the time and just around the apartments in general. we figured it was someone who lived there letting their grand kids or nieces/nephews come swim since it was the summer, but it turned out that the apartments were forced to make a certain amount of the units section 8 due to all the hurricane katrina people flooding dallas

i am glad we got out of there soon after, i can only imagine how it turned out

Section 8 housing is useful for broke-ass part-time working students, too. There was a big deal about some of the FTW apartments becoming Section 8, and nothing much has ever come of it, due to the predominance of students. It's still a risk, but maybe a calculated one by the powers that be.
