Stay the fuck away from Isuzu. Expensive parts, IF you can even find them.
I remember some of your previous posts about your Explorers...always seemed to be positive on them. One thing about them is that I am comfortable working on them. When I was still in the dealership they were among the better vehicles we sold...mostly coming in for maintenance and BS trim type stuff from what I remember....of course that's been a while too.

...and I see what you are saying now on the Isuzu...I went out and found a forum dedicated to them, it seems common that they have electrical issues, weak differentials, and all those guys are bitching about how hard they are to work on. I didn't know a thing about them until I heard from my friend and the guy I work with...but apparently they really are only 2 opinions...that differ from a lot of others out there. I'll be staying away from those and the LRs.

I have an 07 4x4 Explorer, it's a nice comfortable vehicle for around town and moving stuff but I wouldn't use it even moderately off road except for flat dirt trails.

I've owned two XJs and loved them. 5k is plenty to get a very nice, low mileage XJ. That'd be my recommendation of those listed.

No shit, a local LR dealer has more service loaners than new cars on the lot. they have tons of problems like head gaskets, dropping sleeves in the engine, susp probs, three amigos. TONS of shit.

Well...I've got one that I'm considering....came across a guy that has a 98' Explorer in REALLY good shape. However it's not a 4x4 and it's also a 5.0....but the thing only has ~80K original miles and looks practically new inside and out. I seriously couldn't find a single ding on it and the interior is super clean. He told me he needs to get "around" $4500 for it, and I'm thinking about hitting him back at $4K. He's had it for sale for a while, but looks like he started way high on the price and has gradually dropped it over the past few weeks....he's asking $4800 right now. He has also had a couple failed buyers...sounds like he is just ready to move it. I'd imagine there aren't a lot of people out there shopping for 12-14 yr old 2WD Explorers either.

He's the second owner, bought it from a SW Pilot a little over a year ago, has all the records/history, etc.

It's a dead ringer for one that I owned back around 99'...I'm just not sure how important the 4x4 is to me, and I recall gas mileage was pretty bad in my old one with the 5.0 too.

Others had a 5.0 2WD?...I recall mine had good power, but IIRC it was only good for around ~13-15mpg.

That sounds just like the one I saw today, but it is red and a 4-door....same price tho, with just over 80K on it.

                    Couldn't get a 2 door 5.0

For under $5k, it sounds like that '98 is about the best you are going to do. I've got to give another thumbs-up to the Explorers. Between me and my Mom, we've had 3. A '94 2 door, 4.0/auto, owned it a couple years and sold it with 140k or so, never had a problem. A '96 5.0 4 door 2WD, owned for ~5 years, sold with 120k, and my Mom is currently driving a 2000 5.0 4 door AWD. It has 150k on it and they got it with ~45k IIRC. Never had a problem with it at all. She just hops in it, turns the key and drives. Doesn't check oil, tire pressure or any of that shit. I change the oil for them once a year or so, seriously! I've put brakes on it once, a feul filter, and maybe a battery? Pretty damned reliable truck, BUT, she averages 14MPG. She mostly drives in the city though.

I believe all of the 5.0 Mountaineers are AWD, just FYI, and the 5.0 Explorers are available 2WD, 4WD and AWD. The AWD is awesome in the snow/ice/rain/etc for the couple times a year it's needed.

I scored a 96' Jeep XJ over the weekend....found a nice one that was well cared for and not at all abused. Posted a few pics in the Jeep thread over in the pic/video forum. Luckily I was the first to get to it after it was listed....It was CHEAP too.

Cool! I always liked the xj, except the wheel wells are to small.
