  • housing question (San Antonio area- room or RV?)

Talking to a recruiter for another oil company down here and if I come on with them ill have to get a place to stay down here in san ant.y go home every night. Question is, 21 nights of the month ill need a place to stay down here, and with that, would you buy a travel trailer to live in that is right across the highway from your work, or rent a room say 20-25 mins away and commute everyday?

the only places to live near the yard are RV parks. A 1 min commute would be nice at 4am and 11pm. But coming home to a real shower/bed/etc would be nice to each night although the commute might get old.

Which living setup would you choose and why? Just trying to get all the pro's & con's out here to make the decision.

A 1-minute commute time sounds really nice. Living in an RV park during a bad storm doesn't sound so nice though. If it is not a permanent job the RV does sound like the better option and would probably cost a lot less in the long run.

RV sounds okay, depending on cost to buy, park rental fees, etc.

Have you looked at extended stay motels or hotels? Room cleaned for you, around cost of room in a house, but closer commute. (You mentioned being on the highway.)

yea, I was just looking, the commute would be about the same, and be a little bit more per month. Im finding them in the $165-195/week range. Im finding rooms for rent for $400-ish/month

A decent RV and lot rental will likely exceed that budget, unless you already own the RV.

Price the lot for the rv. See if it includes utilities. A decent enough rv can be had fairly cheap and they have showers. The initial cost would be more but I think that would be my preference.

Do you have a pickup? Grab a camper top for it.

RV. I like my own place and an RV feels like home. Only issue is the shower.

not at the moment, traded it for a more fuel efficient car due to the commute from denton to san antonio- but i may need to get it back now.

yea, that is THE only real reason I am dragging my feet. I have taken showers in trailers, and lets say its like taking a shower with a water hose standing in a 5 gallon bucket. If i could find one with a full walk-in shower then we would be talking.

A better shower is just more money.

Go for the RV. When you are done with it you can then sell it. Values are likely repressed right now and there's a chance you can end up flipping it at close to original purchase price...

You can also use the trailer as a tax write-off as a business expense....

wouldnt I have to incorporate or form an LLC or PC to do that?

My buddy is in the oil business, doing deed and title research and that's what he does...not sure if he works as an undependent under his own firm's name or what...if employed direct for the company you are talking with, then it may not be likely....I don't know.

Bottom line, blow your money for a place to stay and have nothing to show for it, or get a camper/trailer and at least you have something to show for your money when all is said and done...
