  • .44 Automag AR-15

    Thoughts, questions, comments, concerns??

I'd love to have an old school .44 Automag, but alas, I'm no DFWM baller.

So, I got to thinking about what it would take to build an AR in .44. I realize this is probably pretty close to the .458 or .50 Beowulf, but is it wrong to be different?

I would think that the bbl would be the only tough part as you could use a .308 bolt. Which brings up another issue. Can you swap the bolt head between the AR-10 and AR-15 or would this caliber have to be built on an AR-10 platform?

You can use a .450 bushmaster bolt. Anything with a .473" bolt face should work.

since the automag is based on a .308 case, an AR10 would be the easiest conversion

      barrel, mag, finished.

Using an AR15 platform is a different story. No the bolt will not interchange, if you saw an AR10 bolt you'd probably laugh. The barrel is going to be your primary issue. However, as interesting as all this sounds, ballistically there are superior cartridges. This would simply be a gigantic pain in the ass that has no real purpose. One other issue would be a huge gas port and tube to try and get it to cycle via the DI system.

I don't think you're going to like what happens when those rounds travel 3/4" off the feed lips under pressure.

Kinda seems like a .450 bushmaster would be a better alternative from I've read.
