  • 67 Mercury Comet 202

The 1967 Comet 202 "R" Code was one of the true ultra rare factory lightweight race/street cars made in the 60's. It was a bare bones 2 door post sedan that was 9" shorter but much stronger than the heavier hardtops. It came with the monster FE 427cid side-oiler, dual 4-barrel, medium riser, 425hp engine. It also was equipped with the 4-speed Top Loader gear box and the famed 9" rear 3.89 Trac-Lok, all from the factory. This rare race car has factory special exhaust manifolds and hood clearance bracing.

The dual-quad 427-cid was a production option in Fairlanes and Comets
for '67. Fewer than 300 were installed, and only five went into the entry-level
202 model, which was shorter and lighter than regular Comets.

              The 1967 Mercury Comet 427
              Specifications
              Wheelbase, inches: 116.0
              Weight, lbs: 3,400
              Number built: 5
              Base price: $3,200

              Standard Engine
              Type: ohv V-8
              Displacement, cid: 427
              Fuel system: 2 x 4bbl.
              Compression ratio: 11.1:1
              Horsepower @ rpm: 425 @ 6000

Speaking of cool shit from Mercury, here's a pic I took from the Mid America Shelby and Ford event a couple of years ago. 1 of 2 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II with a Boss 429, a Ford Aero NASCAR design. This was Ford's answer to the Superbirds and Daytonas.

No but I bought a 1966 Comet 202 in high school. Same color green. It came with a 6 cylinder automatic. At some point someone changed it to a 428 Cobra Jet, toploader, 9 inch posi. Headers, aluminum intake, camshaft etc. It would smoke the tires for a city block. It would break the tires loose in 3rd gear from 60 mph. But it was not reliable as a daily driver. Once the headers got the starter hot it did not like to start. The clutch linkage was messed up.
I was 16 at the time and lucky I never got in trouble. I wish I would have held on to that beast. I paid $425 for the car and drove it home.

I can't find it anywhere, but I remember an old guy at a carshow telling me about these and he said there was only 250 made. I've never seen one, though. Thanks for the post.

Holy shit!! I had no clue about these cars.

That monster looks like it could become a handful to drive.

I was seriously born too late.
