  • Painting bumper covers, fox.

I finally scored a Lx front bumper that isn't fubar'd. It's been primered but looks like dildo still, has the normal rock chips/erosion on the moldings. What can I use to fill those chips?

I want to prep it nice and find someone to paint or paint it myself.

Because rolling around with a cracked bumper is not cool.

Btw, Anyone have a 90-93 passenger fender and both driver and passenger fender extensions?

wow, can't believe no one has tried to help yet.

here goes. personally, if it were me, this is the way I would do it. start by stripping it down without taking material off the bumper. a D/A will do the job just fine. get rid of that primer because you don't know what kind/quality it is. if it turns out to be rattle can or laquer primer it will come back and bite you in the ass. if the chips aren't bad, spray a few coats of a quality high build primer. guide coat it, block it with some 220-320. hopefully that fills in all chips. spray a couple of coats of a urethane primers, guide coat, and block with 400-600. you should be ready to shoot color at that point.

I'm sure now someone will chime in, but let me restate that this is the way I would do it. I am trained and schooled in this but most importantly, I have experience.

Sand it down, spot putty the rock chips with evercoat red. Let it dry! Depending on the day, it can take as little as 15 minutes, or as long as over night. It is not bondo! It is for filling in little imperfections just like this. sand it down smooth, reshot with filler primer, and then wet sand it.

Why do so many people think they can do paint and body work themselves with no experience? If you have a cavity in your toothe, you would not google how to fill a cavity and perform the procedure yourself.

              I painted model cars yo!

Just part of the trade, it's my car kinda like to do my own work, but you are very correct, I'd never attempt to paint my whole car lol!

This bumper looks like it was driven through a rock storm, found one on CL that looks clean... Got a text awaiting a response. (fingers crossed)

you have to start somewhere, not everyone is born a douche bag. comparing surgery to a tooth and paint and body work is bad comparison.

Tha fuck is a "toothe"? I guess I'll google it.

It's not rocket surgery. I painted my entire coupe with zero experience. Read up for awhile, bought some materials, cracked open a beer and let'er rip. I will say that it is absolutely a skill and takes talent, and some people could probably never do it. I was surprised how well I did.

Mike, I did almost exactly what projectPONY described. My bumper had a shit ton of craters. I first roughed it up a little with 320, filled my craters with red putty, sprayed a couple of light layers of primer surfacer, wet blocked it out to 600, then base and cleared it. I even painted the moldings. It's super easy, but don't go cheap on materials, don't pack your material on either or it will crack upon re-installation, and only use an OEM bumper, no matter what. There's pics in my thread down the page a bit.

Your coupe needs that shit, I hope you already finished it.

I found a near perfect condition bumper for 40$ and I'm having mark preus paint them for me. Waiting on him to get space /time at his shop.

Next project to tackle will be repairing the 1/4 window trim, and painting the front and rear windshield trim. It also needs new door seals and all the trim around the side windows. It's a never ending list.

It really never is. They are at the age of resto time. I had all of mine shot gloss black to match the rest of the car. It looks good, because it is black, but any other color, and it wouldn't.
