I will say that the smooth, glass topped electric's are a lot easier to clean, but that is all the positives I can think of.

That's what we have, and it get's dirty a lot faster too. And then the shit gets baked on. I know they aren't as pretty, but if I'm going to have electric, I prefer the crappy looking coil ones.

The last electric one we had got way hotter way faster than the gas one we have now and others I've used. It was much easier to adjust to the perfect heat, starts perfectly every time, etc. I'm not a fan of a gas stove top at all. I know lots of people are, but my experience has always been better with the flat glass top electric.

WTF??? Gas is instantly hot, a burner takes time to warm up. That makes no sense???
