  • Crankcase breathers and the oil odor in the car

After driving roughly 350 miles so far on the new build, I am getting a lot of crankcase oil odor in the passenger compartment. In all fairness I drive mostly with the top down and the breathers are located right infront of the door hinges in the fenderwells. Like this.

That pump above the breather is on a relay and hobbs to come on at 3lbs of boost to pull a vacuum on the crankcase.

There is a breather on the other side in the same place but it is always open.

There is no PVC, only the two -12an lines to two breathers.

    Here is an idea.
Move the setup to the rear. Connect the two valve covers together then a -16an to the rear split to two -12an. One going to the pump and the other to the single open breather. I think putting a check valve inline on the single open one will give me better results when the pump comes on.

The plan would be to pull the fuel tank (need to fix the vent anyways), drain it and get a bracket welded for the pump and breathers.

    Thoughts, opinions?
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Oh, and you can see there is plenty of room on the driver's side of the fuel tank

Thanks. I am gonna try and get it out to as many as I can. I did hear they turned a 1994 Cobra away "too many Mustangs already". I was the ONLY SN95 there I think. I will be pissed if they gave me the same ever.

I have driven that way and the fumes do leach in. Problem is I need to get A/C in the car before I can drive around with the top up right now. I am gonna hit the Sonic GTG on Tuesday, I will give it another shot and see if it is still doing it though.

Either way, moving them to the rear would for sure get rid of the problem.

Sadly, I believe, your evac setup will likely not pull adequate vacuum on the crankcase. When I looked at running a similar setup, I had 2 Tauras SHO smog pumps. It didn't matter if I ran it single or both pumps(when testing), they would only pull about 3"s of vacuum. This was pump connected directly to a vacuum gauge. From what I remember, you need to be able to pull @ 10"s of vacuum on the crankcase at the upper end of the rpm.

Your setup is better than nothing for sure, but not ideal in my opinion. I would recommend a pump for each tank if you continue to run it that way.

OP, The only way to remove the odor is to get it behind the passenger compartment as you've stated. I run a SVO pcv valve, a JLT oil separator between the pcv and vacuum source, and moroso breather bottle like yours mounting behind the passenger side of the radiator on the from rail. This is on my 98. I don't get a lot vapor odor from it.

When I pull it to relocate we might put a gauge on it and see how much it does pull. Again it is a better than nothing situation. Remember a factory breather set up consisted of a PCV and a 1/4" hose from the filler neck to the throttle body.

Link the vents from the catch cans to your tail pipe.

I just have -10 off each valve cover into the fender wells and I never smell any oil, I do smell fuel like a mofo after a fill up with my vented fuel cell though.

Strange thing about my breather setup is that the hoses never seem to have any oil in them at all.

Only problem is that there are no tail pipes on the car right now.

By vents of the catch can, you mean take off the filter and run a hose from that opening to the exhaust?

Low mileage and ring seat MAY have something to do with it on my end. If I am driving it aggressively the cans will get oil and moisture in them.

Yeah, exactly. put it to the down pipe, if that is easier. It will pull a bit of vacuum to. Just make sure it is baffled good, or it will suck oil out of the catch can.

                        via these minus the breathers.

I am going to order another 4" DynaTech muffler and a few pipe peices to dual the system. It would be a good time to weld the stands in. Actually DynaTech makes this little gem. Just needs a check valve. But you can unscrew the stand and plug it.

I would like to think we have great baffles on the valve covers already. A tall valve cover with a wide baffle that is closed to the center and open at the end of the V/C.

Since I started this thread I have put another 100 miles on it and after 550 miles on the turbo and roughly 1000 on the engine, the rings have seated. LOL. Much easier on the eyes and nose now. Have been keeping the drains OPEN on the canisters and checking for drips each time I park it. After a couple trips and this last one I was a little hard on it, no drips, nothing, zip, zilch, nada.

I am still gonna move them to the rear but two open breathers one of which is connected to the vacuum pump (read, takes place of a PCV), I think I will be golden.
