Racing in the rain.

After a couple of years of very bad health issues, the doc's all say I can go back to driving. A stroke, minor, but still a stroke, high blood pressure, 4 procedures, 6 surgeries. Lost most of my vision in my left eye, got cut from my ass to my balls with a bladder problem.

I get to go race, in the rain. Got a few practice laps in the dry ,but not a thing in the wet. I set the kart up for the wet and put the wet tires on. I have won a couple of track championships in the past yet I am still excited / nervous to get to race again.

Hope I just stay on the track and don't screw up.

This is going to be FUN !!!

I'm 57 about to turn 58. Left in the rain from the house but by the time I got to NTK ( at the end of Northstar dragstrip ) it was sorta dry. Don't drive on the edges it wet and muddy.

Had the kart set up for rain with rain tires on it. Put the slicks on it and got ready to go out for a quick practice run and it starts to sprinkle. Go back to the pit area and start to go back to the wets, and I run out of hot laps time.

Drivers meeting, normal stuff, start qualifying, it's "dry". I go out on slicks and the kart set up for rain. I have one of the worst handling karts I have ever drove. Lot's of push. SLOW AS HELL !! Off the normal pace by 9 seconds. Go to the pits and begin to change every thing to dry settings, move the fronts in, the backs out, change the tire pressures, move some weight around, ect.

Heat race, ( 8 laps ), I'm dead last, here we go, 6 of us. Green flag and I hang until the first turn and the evil push is still there. Not as bad but still there. I resolve to just finish. Lap 3 and I see that the leaders are going to lap me and I wave them around, what's on my visor?

It starts raining, steady and hard. I'm watching both of the leaders go off in front of me. I slow in the turns and quickly do a 360 and stop in the side of the old track, running, but stopped still on the track. The other 3 karts pass me and I get going again. I watch the 3 of them all get crunched up and I putts around.
Two more laps and I notice I'm the only one running and a red flag is thrown with the checkers.

Long story short, for the main its dry but because the guys that all went off their karts were broke, bent parts, or couldn't be fixed in time ( we didn't take a break between the heat and main ) no one else showed for the main.
Started and took a lap and came on in with a lot of push still in the kart.

Blue ribbon for me. It's better to be lucky than good.

I had a hoot, just felt good to drive again even it was quite poor driving.

Now for more practice and seat time.

Some of my most exhausting and most fun races have been in the rain. One lemons race I drove anchor on Sunday and it was raining the entire day. We were in second 5 laps down with about 2 hours to go. I made it back on the lead lap and needed about another 20 minutes to run down the leader for the win. Was an AMAZING drive in crappy conditions in houston.

Love me some rain but man is it exhausting!

I hate the rain. I autocrossed in the rain two weeks ago and spun almost every run. i blame the weather not my lack of ability. lol
