For those that aren't familiar:
In a fantasy world, I would be doing rallycross, and I think there's a fair chance that I will some day. With that in mind, one of the best things about rallycross is that it's really fun and REALLY cheap, relative to other forms of racing.
So, the challenge is to find the best sub-$1K car to buy who's only job is to slide around in the dirt.
It's more important that it have a strong driveline than being fast. Those taking it seriously will have Subarus, but I'm thinking the most fun is to be had with the cheapest beater possible.

I figure it's a clutch swap away from being fun as hell to beat up in a field.
