  • Drag strip Barrier at Northstar.

After last night's meeting, North Texas Karters have decided to put a car barrier at the end of the drag strip. We have had several cars come through the fence at the end of Northstar and end up on the property. The last one was a brown street car ( Camaro ) on 10 " slicks a couple of weeks ago.

I was flaging the race and looked up to see this guy not slowing and curving off the strip at speed. In the middle of a Kart race. He end up hitting a big liquid filled square container and comes through the fence and stops 20 feet from the scoreing tower. No injuries but the car is bent. Later I see a dragster loop itself just at the end of the strip but stops. Again durring a race.

A full size car would crush any of the Karts. If anyone says "who would put a kart track at the end of a drag strip". We didn't, we were there first.

I know that the dusting of the strip is a issue and the karters are trying to get everyone to slow down to 10 MPH on the road to keep the dust down. I don't care for the tires / barrels on the road but they do keep people from driving fast down the road and I agree the strip has the right to do this. I wish we could oil the road down but the tree huggers say no.

Some people in the club want to put those Jersey Barriers, concrete road barriers across the back fence. Right now we have a pipe barrier with Armco on the bottom. It,s just not long enough. Works well as we have had it tested by several crashes and then rewelded. It will give some as it is just buried deep in the dirt but after each crash we have to repair it. I don't think the concrete barriers would be so forgiving. I like to hear if youall have any ideas on how to our keep the track safe and not be any more danger to the drag cars.

The new barriers cost about $25.00 a foot and would go completely across the back fence. Pipe is $$$ and labor intense.

Trying to be good neighbors but safe for our track.

Been a few years since I've been out there- is there not a sand pit at the end of the track prior to the barrier?

Sound like you're working towards a solution for both-kudos

Let me know if you want my buddy to give you a quote on the pipe fencing, if you decide to go that route.

Yes , there is a sand pit but it only covers the end of the strip. and its not real deep as say an F1 sand pit. Most of the cars tend to vear away from the end.

We had a jet dragster not even get to the end when it began to roll through the fence and set all the hay / grass on fire and we had to go into firefighting mode.

This last car was 50/ 80 yards from the current pipe barrier.

I didn't know you were out there. I was there too working with the MDG/Kart Nation guys, then saw that 3rd gen Camaro hit the tires.

Have you considered a "Stop" sign?

Tried that, didn't work out to good.

I would just not like to see a drag car hit one of those Jersy barriers but I don't want to squash a kart.

writing off a car is better than writing off a human....likely a kid. How about finding an old truck/trailer or piece of equipment, maybe a fire truck full of water. Make it big, make it ugly and make it scary. I bet it slows the drag cars down a bunch!

better hope no one hits it and gets killed.........im pretty sure no one drives through the fence on purpose.....i would think an 80 ft long pit about a foot deep full of small pee gravel would be alot better for anyone involved

I would think if the track was willing to pay for that, he might let them

I support this plan of action! Get fireworks AND a crash. It's like watching NASCAR in a straight line!

it will slow you down really quick, or send you rolling if you are a bit sideways.

what about a row or two of those big barrels filled with water that they use on freeways?

                            Here, quick google:
                            Fitch Barrier

Fitch barriers / barrels. This is an installation in Canada.

A Fitch Barrier is a type of impact attenuator consisting of a sand- or water-filled plastic barrel, usually yellow colored with a black lid. The "Fitch Highway Barrier System" was invented by race car driver John Fitch; he stated he was inspired by sand-filled fuel cans which he used to protect his tent from strafing during World War II.[3]

Fitch barriers are often found in a triangular arrangement at the tip of a guard rail between a highway and an exit lane (the area known as the gore), along the most probable line of impact. The barriers in front contain the least sand, with each successive barrel containing more; so that when a vehicle collides with the barrels they shatter, the kinetic energy is dissipated by scattering the sand, and the vehicle decelerates smoothly instead of violently striking a solid obstruction, reducing the risk of injury to the occupants.

Fitch barriers are widely popular due to their effectiveness, low cost, and ease of setup and repair or replacement. Since first being used in the late 1960s, it is estimated that they have saved as many as 17,000 lives.[4]

no different than an Armco barrier or concrete k-wall. I was going for something cheap and available to protect his racers from the idiots on an adjacent property that obviously aren't being responsible with regards to safety. fuck em'. Anything you put up down there to stop an out of control car is going to cause a lawsuit in these days and times. Document the need and possibility of a child being killed and a jury is going to frown on the owner of the adjacent property who has yet to do anything after KNOWING there is a safety issue. It's called negligence and insurance doesn't cover that.

the large water/sand filled barriers are a great idea....I just don't feel the Kart track should have to pay to install it. Maybe if they put a 50' semi trailer on it side there, the denton track owner will then be forced to do something....?
