  • C/D Test the ZL1 and GT500 (Kind of)

Car and Driver has tested both the ZL1 and GT500. While C/D tested with their drivers on the ZL1, SVT only allowed C/D to ride shotgun in the GT500. Here are the results of both tests. Keep in mind that the GT500 had a passenger in the tests, while the ZL1 did not. So the curb weight is pretty close in the testing. No road course testing was done.

    ZL1
    Curb Weight: 4120
    Base Price: $56,295
    Engine: 6.2L 580 hp, 562tq
    0-60: 4.1
    1/4 mile: 12.3 seconds
    Top Speed (Claimed): 180
    MPG: 13

    GT500
    Curb Weight: 3850
    Base Price: $59,000
    Engine: 5.8L 650 hp, 600tq
    0-60: 3.7
    1/4 mile: 11.7 seconds
    Top Speed (Claimed): 202
    MPG: 15

        I thought the GT500 was a 5.8 motor?

It is. I believe he's adding the displacement from the blower as well.

Ah...well I guess it's not included in the Chevy then?

Crap......forgot to change one thing in the ol "cut and paste" routine.

Also both engine size figures do not include the blowers.

                Cool. I feel better... ;-)

Also, I did a "ride along" with a factory SVT pilot in Las Vegas, and not many folks will drive that car as well as a factory guy.

I have little doubt the ZL1 is going to be slower than the '13 GT500, but a 12.3 is pretty lame. I would think the car is an easy mid to high 11 second car with a 'good' driver and the GT500 is probably a mid to lower 11 second car with good traction and a good driver.

It was a factory driver, and those are factory tires. Stickies would definitely be a low 11 for the GT500 and a mid to high 11 for ZL1.

In all fairness (I should have put this little tid bit in the original post), the GT500 was tested at Martindale. Their policy is that vehicles being tested in the winter, must be fitted with winter tires. Unshaken policy. The best part is that Pirellis were on the back and Bridgestone Blizzaks on the front because Ford couldn't find correctly sized Pirelli winter tires. 19s on the front. 20's on the back.

Yep, my CTSV Cadillac was 3850 on the scale too.

Crazy, I grew up when a 400hp factory car was a bitch to drive around town and if you caught two red lights it was puking coolant before you knew it. And you knew you was on a good pass when the wheel hop would jar the glove box open.
