  • So, this weekend, I'm getting the truck ready for the 7.0 class

    Long read, but humorous -

So, some of you may or may not know - I also have a V8 S10. I bought the truck earlier in 2010 as a HEAP, and thought it would be fun to build on a "budget".

It pretty much came as a roller, and had all the parts to reassemble it. The parts were in sad shape, as was the truck. The heads (462 double humps) had severly sunken seats and needed a lot of machine work, the shortblock had several broken pistons etc. Trans burned up. Many wires twisted together and not even taped! Like, 25 or so!

    FFWD to this weekend.

The truck is finally running.. kinda. This is the same block, with some different pistons, a summit cam, cheap gasket set etc.. Same shit I've done a million times - a "quick thrown together shortblock" to have fun with. I noticed the first time I started it, that it had an unusual amount of blow by - it was puffing out the valve covers pretty good. No biggie, I expected some, but not THAT bad. It also looked like steam - still no biggie, it had no antifreeze smell, none in the oil etc...It was open headers so I coudln't keep it running long. THis weekend rolls around and Paul and I took it to the muffler shop (Phil's muffler in North FTW, HIGHLY recommend.)

....So, now, I'm back home, mufflers on it - ready to rock...NOT..

I fired it up, left it running to warm it up - had the timing light on the core support, getting ready to set timing. Finally warmed it up, it just DIES.. out of no where. I figured it blew an ignition fuse? No, So, I go to fire it back up - it coughs, sputters and finally kicks off.. it had flooded for some fucked up reason. I checked and adjusted the floats in the front - as they were dripping out of the boosters. No biggie. I went to get the timing light, squeezed the trigger - NOTHING. It shit out. Great. I killed the truck, did something else.. came back and started it again, or tried to..due to overly advanced timing, it kicked back and killed the starter and flex plate...or at the very least - mortally wounded them. I get out, turn the timing way back so it would ease up on the starter. I backed the truck out into the driveway and was going to adjust the rockers (told Paul earlier they needed adjusting).. Revved it once or twice, and it popped through the carb!! WTF!! Now, for those of you in the know those symtpoms indicate the FUCKING CAM IS GOING FLAT!! Pulled the valve covers.. yup, #1 exhaust lobe is a gonner. FWIW, this engine MIGHT have a total of 30 minutes break in time.

So, in the course of a day - the starter shit out, the flex plate got trashed, it's started to leak oil, it flattened the cam, it has some pretty good blowby...

I guess it's time to take it apart. grr...Just thought I'd share.

Seriously, that sucks! these new oil formulas are hell in hydraulic tappet cams.

      Yeah, no shit!

I mean, it wasn't a big investment - the WHOLE shortblock was about 225$ or so. It's nothing I haven't done a million times before - I can only think of one time I had a cam go flat.

This time around, I'll probably go ahead and bore the block and put a "nice" cam in it - since now it has "good" heads. (Vortec 906's.)

I'd like to find a Vortec 5.7L truck motor if you know anyone with one

Something else to check is make sure the studs arent pulling out of the heads. Im sure you probably checked but I had a V8 S10 back in the day ironically, with about the same thing in it. I had hell on startup and thought the same thing and even pulled the cam and it was perfect. Come to find out I had a couple studs pulling out. I ended up pinning the studs and it worked fine.

Covered that base LONG before it was put together - Screw in studs and guideplates etc..

Why would he want to slow it down?

Hope it didn't snap the starter mounting boss off the block.

There are a couple of options for zinc, zddp etc. Did you have stiff springs on the heads? That sucks dude!

Yeah Danny, it has "stiff" springs - but nothing serious. The cam is small, so springs are weak, or kinda weak.

I have to pull the engine regardless, so the starter ring is no biggie.

Man, that first kickback was the worst I've ever experienced!

It didn't have any additives in it, and have never done that in the past - but next time around, I problaby will.

Pull up a chair and read the Hamb for more information than you could ever care to read on the subject.

They're into weird shit there like flat tappet cams.

LOL, its not getting much slower than it is right now! Sorry Brooks, I had to

Seriously though, I bet that truck would scoot with just a 5.3, cam and a bottle.
