  • DIY HVAC/RADIO/SHIFTER Panel blanks

Was bored last night, had some oak and headliner sitting around, decided to make some panels for my dash. Since the car wont have any HVAC and since the shifter is in the ashtray location I need to make something to fill in the holes.

Took some cardboard and make templates, then cut it out of my oak panel. Took some U-Nuts and drilled the board/dash for the hardware. Used some machine hex-headed bolts since I think they look nicer. Then cut out the holes for the radio and gauges. Then I just sprayed some headliner stuff on them and wrapped them in black headliner material. Wired everything up and viola (not that it is hard, but this was the first time I've ever wired a radio into a car that has absolutely no factory wiring, not one inch of wire that came with the car, so it was a bit different then doing a car that has a harness)!

Go ahead and flame on about the wood, I might use this as a template at some point to make it out of aluminum, but actually the wood works well and holds the headliner very well. Nobody (except everyone on here) has to know it is actually wood

        Not bad, pretty crafty!

If it were me, I'd be looking for some button head screws instead of the regular ol' allen head screws. I'd think it looks cleaner.

plan is to add a fuel gauge there, right now i have oil pressure, oil temp, trans temp, water temp, volt, and clock...going to add a fuel gauge as soon as i modify my tank for a sender and eventually boost and fuel pressure (although fuel will likely reside on cowl as i don't want to spend the coin on a sender).

ya, might look into it, i used 1/4" screws so it would be very easy to swap them out if i find something that looks better.

              Very true.

I am sure this going to sound odd, especially since the rest of the dash is plastic, but I really like the way the headliner stuff looks after it is done, I might be alone, but it just has a nice feel to it, kinda soft, looks more finished, I dunno exactly what it is. For smaller pieces I like ABS, but for large areas I like this.
