At the very least, I'd look for a name brand - Miller, Hobart, lincoln etc.
Although, I will say this - I have used the imported TIG welders and plasma cutters, and they worked fine. I just never had to worry about consumables or service. Once you do, that's when you realize the value of "made in America".
