First thing, The short weld looks to be a bit too hot, as evidence of the splatter and the near concave-ness of the weld.

The second pic, it much too cold - You can see the stacking and near the edges you can easily see where your 'weave' started and stopped. A slight bit more heat, or a bit less wire will get you much better results.

Last but not least, Put your work in a comfortable position and the two things above will get a lot easier. I know that's not always possible, but you don't want to weld out of postion if you don't absolutely have to.
Thank you very much for the tips! Will do

I am wanting to pick up a welder and start learning to weld. Is this a good unit to start with? It seems to have the best ratings I have found for the 110v units.

It's real hard to tell by looking at the picture, but I'm 99% sure eastwood doesn't make their own welders. With that bieng said, they likely buy them from something other than a name brand company - but anything's possible.

At the very least, I'd look for a name brand - Miller, Hobart, lincoln etc.

Although, I will say this - I have used the imported TIG welders and plasma cutters, and they worked fine. I just never had to worry about consumables or service. Once you do, that's when you realize the value of "made in America".

Hit the Tools section of Craig's List. No shipping, hands on testing, etc.
