It's deffinatley not a 8.5, they didn't make those till 73 for that platform. Although, that is a Compton cover. I am making a couple calls to see if I can score a 12 bolt.

haven't pulled it apart yet... pretty sure the pinion bearing took a crap and let the pinion move enough to trash the ring gear.

I could probably rebuilt it and be ok for a while.. but I want to go to the track and put slicks on it and not worry about breaking it.

Nice work on everything. I like the coating you have on that hot parts. Have you seen any changes after initial heat cycling?

My Dad and I are working on a 5.3 swap that I am trying to talk him in to doing a turbo on.

Someone else mentioned it but have you considered an 8.8.

haven't noticed any color changes yet in the coating

I thought about it but i'm going to go ahead with the 9" because i can order one ready to go and parts are readily available for th 9"

well I did it.....
I just placed my order for a new 9" from Quick Performance
I don't remember everything but what I know is:
NEW housing with GM housing ends so I can use my existing brakes
31 spline axles
Detroit TrueTrac posi (after research this was my best bet for street and strip)
3.50 gears
Nodular 3rd member
1350 yoke
oil fill and drain plugs with jack pad
adjustable lower control arm mount
I know there is more but he was reading it so fast I didn't catch the rest!
