Do it right the first time, go with the 9 inch. No sense in breaking the 8 a couple of times that could have been done cheaper in the long run with a 9 it's not going to break.

I've always figured that "hope" wasn't a valid strategy. The 9" will set you back, but you can forget it once its in. Just my 2¢.

Is that not the original cover on that rear end? If so, thats an 8.5 10 bolt aka "compton 10 bolt". They are really good rear ends, I ran mine for a couple of bracket seasons in my 72 SS Nova. You will have no problems at all out of it, I went 6.70's all day long on one.
When I sold my 57 PU, it had a 12 bolt rear end out of Chevelle.
