  • 97 cobra: Eaton swap or Vortech kit?

This was disscused at the friday meet. I'd really like to go eaton after riding in Steve's car. low-high range power was incredible. I have a budget of $2300 maybe up to $2600 if I wait until next november. Suggestions? What is the breakdown of the eaton swap on a B headed car?

On a sidebar. Anyone know a good shop that does alignments near Carrollton?

You have to change ALOT to do a eato swap on a b-headed car.
Better off finding a used k.b. or vortech.

For that price you could swap a c headed motor into your car with a eaton on it.

I've seen it done for less. Dont listen when people say those motors are 4-6k. Because they are not.

Mach 1 and aviator engines go for about 1600-1800.

There's a kid in town that got a 03 cobra motor for around 2200 I believe.

Also know someone who got a Mach 1 motor 100% complete for 1200, dropped it in a hpp tuned it to over 320rwhp stock.

I wouldn't go centri charger on a 4v, a roots style are better IMO.

Since you have a n/a manifold price a turbo kit you'd be surprised. And while you're at it cut the runners in the intake.

Hope you enjoyed it and it helped to make your decision. There was no traction for shit last night with the sand all over the road, plus the sprinklers getting the street all wet. With some traction it's alot more fun.

It's all in what you got and what you want to do. I'd think there's a better chance dollar wise finding a nice used centri setup over a roots style given the b-head setup. Had a buddy with a 97 cobra in 97-98 that had a kenny bell and some 4.10's that ran 12.20's 1\4 mile on slicks. Doesn't sound like much but that was a pretty good step for parts right out of the box.

Just because he can buy a C headed motor and Eaton cheaper than a Vortech kit (which I doubt), doesn't mean he can get the motor in the car (running no less) for cheaper. What would cost less from a labor standpoint - installing a bolt in Vortech kit or a motor swap?

Like I said last night if you only want 400 rwhp a Vortech is your best bet for reliability/ease of install. There are Kenne Bell kits out there, but most only make 325-350 rwhp because it's around a 1.6L blower. I prefer Vortech because under 3,000 RPM it's like it's not even on there, but then when you're ready to play just drop the hammer and let the 4.56s do their job of keeping the RPMs up.

I didn't think swapping a motor and plugging in a wiring harness would be hard enough to pay someone to do it. Even if you had to modify the harness it's still not difficult. What it comes down to is effort and time.

But I'd rather put in the extra hours and small coin to make 100 extra hp.

400rwhp is weak sauce in today's world.

I personally have seen a kid buy a running Mach 1 engine for 1200 and a eaton + everything needed to do the swap for 500. And add 500 for the tune.

                            2200$ and it made 470rwhp.

The rod then bent, so he put cobra rods and pistons in it for another 600.

So for 2800$ he could have made 470rwhp safely. But he went 2.8 kenne bell instead that he bought new and made 600 to the tire.

He bought a 03 cobra for 6,000 running and driving just needed a super charger because the stock eaton wasnt making boost.

Deals are out there, just wait and find them.

My reccomemdation on what I would do with your car, I'd go turbo or nitrous.

Nitrous is the cheapest and fastest option.

Look at dyno torque curves with nitrous cars. Badass
