  • need cam help

Ok fellas I have a stock early model 302 out of a 69 hardtop coupe. Cast iron gt40 heads at the machine shop getting a valve job and roller rockers installed. The car is gonna be a cruiser and passed on to one of my boys. I'm lookin see what kind of cam lifters and pushrods to have the shop install. I'd like a good sound when idling and I'm not sure of the compression of the block yet until I can take it to the shop.
Yeah its old and ugly but

I'm going with a Comp Cams XE268H-10 with gt40 cast iron heads, weiand stealth intake, autolite 4100/1.12 secondaries in my '65 mustang with a 5 speed tranny and 3:55 gears. I haven't run it yet, but I think it will be a very solid combo.

I'm using the Crane 2031 cam on my '92 LX (lift is .512/.529, duration is .214/.220 at .050 with 1.7 rockers). Rest of the combo is GT40 heads (TFS .550 valve springs), Explorer intake, Crane/Cobra 1.7 rockers, TFS 6.3" pushrods, BBK longtubes, BBK catted H-pipe, 2.5" Dynomax catback, 70mm TB, AFM intake pipe, Pro-M 77mm MAF, 24 lb injectors. Dyno tuned with an SCT chip it made 265 rwhp and 305 rwtq.

My '92 is just a nice cruiser. It has cold A/C, handling suspension, 17" wheels, Baer Brakes, and 3.27 gears. I picked this cam because it has stock like driveability (no surging, stalling, etc), has a great lope at idle, solid low end power, and is emmissions legal (I passed inspection with flying colors). Powerband is 1500-5500 rpms. I got it new from Summit for $189.

Honestly, any of the basic cams will do (TFS-1, Ford B/E cam, Comp 258 or 264, etc).

Make sure if you go with a roller you get the correct lifters . You will need the link bar style or have the retro fit setup with the correct base circle cam . I preffer the link bar lifters because they drop right in with no machine work and you can run any off the shelf roller with them .

Thanks for all the input fellas. Just found a new donor block from one of our members last night and he has a comp cam in it already so my 69 block will be either for sale or stroked bored and honed.

dont forget your 69 had a 2piece rear main while a newer will use a 1 piece rear main seal, I dunno if the crank is swappable like that, not sure but Im just sayin..
